Love / Shove post by Kjerstin Johnson on June 29, 2009 - 2:11pm; tagged academia, antifeminist feminism, antifeminist women, Christina Hoff Sommers, Chronicle of Higher Education, women's studies.

"Feminist misinformation is pervasive," Christina Hoff Sommers writes in today’s Chronicle of Higher Education.“Persistent Myths in Feminist Scholarship” is the latest from the author of Who Stole Feminism: How Women Have Betrayed Women and The War on Boys: How Misguided Feminisim is Harming our Young Men, adding to her legacy of anti-feminist feminism and raising a stink over the contemporary feminist movement in academia.

Back in the homeland

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen on May 11, 2008 - 6:48pm; tagged academia, class, classism, fundraising, Minnesota, on the road, outreach, queer, trans identity, transgender, transsexual, women of color, women's studies.

I knew I was close to home when I started hearing corn crop fungicide commercials on the radio.

I got into Minnesota a day early, because I took a wrong turn leaving Chicago and by the time I called the folks I was supposed to meet up with, they laughed (kindly) and told me to keep heading West, as it would've taken another two hours of backtracking to get there.

Trying to keep up

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen on May 9, 2008 - 10:27am; tagged academia, community organizing, Detroit, fundraising, labor politics, magazines, nonprofits, on the road, outreach, unions, women's studies.

Clearly I'm not one of those people who can keep my blog up-to-the-minute, but I want to mention two more things about my visit to Detroit, even though I'm actually two states beyond at this point.

Before I left town, I had lunch with some staff members of Labor Notes, an incredible and radical organization/magazine that provides a forum for union activists to honestly examine problems within the labor movement (i.e., not just ever-weakening labor laws and employer offensives, but problems like weak unions and union leaders not doing their job). Similar to Bitch, they're a nonprofit organization that publishes a magazine. They also publish pamphlets and books (including one of my favorites, The Troublemakers Handbook: How to fight back where you work and win) and organize a bi-annual Labor Notes conference. I highly encourage everyone to read what happened at their most recent conference in April. There's some f'd-up stuff going on in union organizing these days.

Backlash in Action

Article by Lisa Jervis, appeared in issue Issue #2; published in 1996; filed under Broadcast; tagged backlash, Murphy Brown, stereotypes, tv women, victimization, women's studies.
The Supposedly Feminist Murphy Brown
Issue #2

Murphy Brown’s a feminist show, right? I know it seems pretty old hat by now, but featuring a successful single mother and criticizing the Vice President is big stuff—for a sitcom, that is. Sometimes we have to take whatever we can get.
