New Stevie Nicks Film "In Your Dreams" is Only for the Superfans

Movies post by Kerensa Cadenas on March 26, 2013 - 10:52am; tagged documentary, feminism, fleetwood mac, music, stevie nicks, Twilight.

Stevie Nicks dressed in black.
I love Stevie Nicks. Who doesn't? However, I came upon her music only within the last couple years—I'm by no means a Stevie expert. So I was excited to see In Your Dreams, the new film Nicks and collaborator Dave Stewart directed, at SXSW this month; the screening was a chance to learn more about Stevie from herself and an opportunity to wear a Stevie-approved ensemble (long flowing skirt obviously).

Beautiful Creatures is a Cut Above Other Supernatural Teen Romances

Movies post by Monica Castillo on February 27, 2013 - 2:19pm; tagged beautiful creatures, Twilight, vampires, witches, YA fiction.

‘Tis the season of the perennial teenage supernatural romance.  New film Beautiful Creatures is a chicken-and-dumplings plate with a heapin’ helping of that angst-filled young love so common to tween fantasy, spiced with Flannery O’Conner-flavored Southern Gothic and topped off with a healthy side of Civil War history and folklore.

Thank God It's Over: An Elegy for Twilight

Movies post by Tanya Erzen on November 15, 2012 - 2:59pm; tagged Breaking Dawn, movies, Twilight.

"Twilight fan" meme

In its heyday, Dazzled by Twilight operated two stores, a performance space, and a tour of Twilight-related sites around Forks, Washington (population 3,175 and 8.5 Vampires), the former logging town–turned–Twilight fan mecca. Amidst fake conifers (including one carved with “Bella loves Edward” on the trunk), an Astroturf grass floor, and fountains, frenzied fans swooped up shirts emblazoned with slogans like "Bite Me" and "Vampires Only, Please," as well as posters, mugs, bumper stickers, and jewelry. On Oct 29th, the entire store was demolished in a fire. However, Dazzled had already shuttered its doors the previous January.

At the peak of Twlight mania, in 2010, there were close to 73,000 pilgrimages to Forks; by the following year, the numbers dwindled to half that amount. With Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the final film in the series, opening later tonight, Forks is a bleak reminder of what the end of Twilight mania portends. During the boom years, longtime residents were alternately bemused and resentful by the spotlight on their town, but the attention of fans—and their money—enabled Forks to survive a brutal recession. One t-shirt designed by a local featured a logger bearing an axe in one hand and a struggling vampire writhing in the other.

No broken ribs in Breaking Dawn

Movies post by Kjerstin Johnson on June 17, 2010 - 10:35am; tagged abortion, Breaking Dawn, childbirth, pregnancy, Twilight.
A still from Rosemary's Baby. Mia Farrow clutches her pregnant belly and looks horrified at something off camera.
Even though we're three feature films away from the conclusion of the Twilight film series (Eclipse premiers at the end of this month), there's already talk of what the adaptation of Breaking Dawn, the final book in the series that is being broken into two movies, is going to include...or more specifically leave out, namely Bella's bone-breaking, blood-soaked, and almost-lethal delivery of her vampire baby.

Douchebag Decree: Caitlin Flanagan, our first Douchebag All-Star!

Douchebag Decree post by Andi Zeisler on May 19, 2010 - 10:07pm; tagged antifeminist women, Caitlin Flanagan, Douchebag All-Stars, Douchebag Decree, housewives, motherhood, teen sex, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Twilight.

Sometimes a simple acknowledgment of douchery just isn’t enough. Sometimes you have to step back and marvel at how consistent, how dedicated, how impressively shameless a person’s commitment to being a total asshole is. And that’s why Bitch has decided it’s time to start recognizing those individuals as the All-Star douchebags they are. Practically, it just makes sense: We plan to be awarding Douchebag Decrees for many years to come, and there are some people it would just be easier to mention once, acknowledging that not only have they already amassed an impressive body of douchebaggery, they will surely keep it up for the foreseeable future.

It’s in this spirit that we give a nod today to the lifetime douchechievements of Mrs. Caitlin Flanagan: author, columnist, wife, mother, professional scold, and 24-karat-gold douchebag.

Bill Condon brings creepy sexpertise to Breaking Dawn

Movies post by Kelsey Wallace on April 29, 2010 - 12:23pm; tagged Bill Condon, Breaking Dawn, Candyman, Directors, Dreamgirls, Kinsey, Twilight.
What do sex, creepiness, Beyoncé, The Candyman, and Robert Pattinson have in common (besides making for excellent fanfic)? Why, Bill Condon, of course. The director, best known for his work on Kinsey and Dreamgirls, will direct the fourth installment in the Twilight franchise, Breaking Dawn. Is this a good thing? Let's look at some of his past work and make unfounded predictions! (Come on, you've got nothing better to do at work today than watch Candyman trailers, right?)

Who else but Bill Condon could bring our profoundly disturbing romance to life onscreen?

The Young and The Feckless: What Cinema Says About Career Type

Social Commentary post by J Maureen Henderson on April 16, 2010 - 10:47am; tagged career, George Clooney, jobs, movies, The Young and The Feckless, Twilight, unemployment, Up in the Air.
One of the most thought-provoking movies I saw in 2009 (okay, I didn't see it until 2010) was Up in the Air. Even months later, I'm still not sure whether I actually liked it or if it's the kind of movie that's even meant to be liked. I do credit it with rekindling my love for the word meta and spurring me to pronounce things to be zeitgeisty at the drop of a hat.

I was reminded of Up in the Air the other day when I was pondering the relationship people have to their work, a subject that has come up in conversation (both online and off) a heckuva lot in recent weeks. In the movie, George Clooney's character fires people for a living and, naturally, most of these people don't take the terminations well. In many cases, their reactions betray an anguish and anger that goes beyond a loss of guaranteed income and benefits. Their jobs represented their identity, their self worth, the means by which they defined themselves in the world. Take away the title and what's left?

What Would Buffy Do? Notes on Dusting Edward Cullen

DigiBitch post by Guest Star on August 12, 2009 - 2:08pm; tagged Buffy the Vampire Slayer, internet videos, Jonathan McIntosh, Twilight, vampires, WIMN's Voices.
This article was originally published on July 1 at WIMN's Voices (don't worry -- they gave us permission to re-post it!)

By Jonathan McIntosh

I usually try to stay away from the forces of darkness, but last week I killed a famous vampire – and let me tell you, it was fun! Actually, I didn’t stake him myself — I used new media tools to allow one of the strongest female television characters of our generation to do it. OK, let me back up a minute. Last week, at the Open Video Conference at NYU Law School, I debuted my feminist mash-up video, Buffy v. Edward. It’s an example of transformative storytelling which reinterprets the movie Twilight by re-cutting and combining it with the TV series Buffy: The Vampire Slayer.

Bite Me! (Or Don't)

Bite Me! (Or Don't)
Article by Christine Seifert, published in 2008; filed under Books; tagged abstinence, fan fiction, objectification, porn, sex, Stephenie Meyer, Twilight, vampires, YA fiction.
Stephenie Meyer’s vampire-infested Twilight series has created a new YA genre: abstinence porn

Abstinence has never been sexier than it is in Stephenie Meyer’s young adult four-book Twilight series. Fans are super hot for Edward, a century-old vampire in a 17-year-old body, who sweeps teenaged Bella, your average human girl, off her feet in a thrilling love story that spans more than 2,000 pages. Fans are enthralled by their tale, which begins when Edward becomes intoxicated by Bella’s sweet-smelling blood.

The Genius Behind American Pie Might Be Directing the Twilight Sequel

Movies post by Tammy Oler on December 10, 2008 - 10:05am; tagged catherine hardwicke, chris weitz, New Moon, Twilight.

More (rumored) news on the Twilight sequel now that Catherine Hardwicke is no longer the director.  Nikki Finke's got an inside line that Summit has offered Chris Weitz the chance to direct New Moon - and potentially Eclipse, if both films could be made back-to-back.  Weitz is the writer and director of About a Boy, producer and uncredited director of American Pie, and the director for The Golden Compass adaptation.  According to Finke, sources claim that Summit liked the look of The Golden Compass, but the real reason this deal might be in the works is that Weitz is an old buddy of Summit's president of production.

Do you ever get the feeling that the Hollywood old boy's club is just being replaced with a newer boy's club?

More after the jump... including irrational behavior from a male director!
