Top 10 Reasons: You Deserve Comics That Highlight Women Who Have Made Critical Contributions to Society.

Bitch HQ post by Kristin Rogers Brown on November 28, 2012 - 1:07pm; tagged 10 reasons, comics, donate, illustration, Ladydrawers, subscribe.

You deserve comics that highlight women who have made critical contributions to society.

We all deserve history that comes alive. The best stories, to me, are the ones with weird and sometimes awkward details that we can relate to. Illustration in general also makes complex issues and stories easier to digest. It's hard to be interested in stories when you don't see yourself in them, and hard to imagine yourself in a creative field when you don't see room for yourself in it.

I believe strongly that this is work worth making. (Why, you ask? Read more, complete with comics! After the jump...)

The frost-covered issue of Underground is on its way to mailboxes and newsstands soon, but you can check out three new articles ahead of time today! Lauren Elmore looks at whether a spate of recent pop songs is making things "better" (or not) in "Raise Your Glass If U R A Firework Who Was Born This Way: Who's to say what makes a gay anthem?". Emi Koyami examines how the mainstream anti-trafficking movement isn't as progressive as pop culture would have you believe in "Trade Secrets: The tough talk of the new anti-trafficking movement". And then there's my interview with Issa Rae, creator of the hilarious Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl on wrapping the series up while looking forward. Click through for the full text and to preview these articles before they hit your mailbox. And don't forget—you can still subscribe today to get your issue of Underground AND get an awesome floaty pen when you do!

Keep Bitch in Print: A Special Message to Male Bitch Supporters!

Bitch HQ post by Brian Frank on July 29, 2011 - 8:35am; tagged bitch magazine, Bitch Media, Keep Bitch in Print, men, subscribe, support.

Today I’m calling on other male-identified Bitch supporters to do their part. Bitch, like feminism in general, is not and cannot just be for women.

Let’s face it—men are underrepresented in their support for the feminist movement. A lot of men believe that feminism is just for women, or at least that they don’t have a constructive role to play. I’m here to tell you that's a bunch of hooey, and to thank all the men out there who speak up about sexism's impacts.

I’m asking every guy reading this today to put your money where your mouth is. If you support keeping one of the strongest, wittiest and most consistent voices in feminist media in print now is the time to show it.

Keep Bitch in Print: What it All Means

Bitch HQ post by Julie Falk on July 28, 2011 - 12:33pm; tagged donate, Keep Bitch in Print, subscribe, support.
Across the world—on Facebook and Twitter, through our blogs and podcasts, in classrooms, and in our very own lending library—thousands of people engage with Bitch Media. Providing and encouraging a feminist response to pop culture is important work that we intend to carry on for years to come.

The very real danger, however, is that we might not be able to continue to provide a feminist response to pop culture with a printed magazine. So we're asking you today, and we'll continue to ask over the next week and a half: Do you want Bitch Media to continue publishing a quarterly magazine?
