BitchTapes: Royal Wedding Anniversary Mix!

Music post by Kelsey Wallace on April 27, 2012 - 12:18pm; tagged BitchTapes, royal wedding.
This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of THE ROYAL WEDDING (a.k.a. the biggest media frenzy of our lifetimes, a.k.a. the time you stayed up late eating rice cakes tweeting about Pippa Middleton, a.k.a. something you maybe didn't care about but still saw on the news the next day, etc.). In honor of the royal couple's anniversary, I am re-publishing this Royal Wedding Mix I made last year. Listen to it while you defrost that slice of wedding cake you've been saving in your freezer since April 29, 2011. The songs are just as regal as ever!

The Wedding March: Is the Honeymoon Over?

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on May 4, 2011 - 11:37am; tagged kate middleton, LGBT, prince william, protest, royal wedding.
Now that the confetti has settled, the media is starting to move on from the modern fairytale. But there are some people for whom the royal wedding was an experience they’ll never forget, in all the wrong ways.

BitchTapes: Royal Wedding Mix!

Music post by Kelsey Wallace on April 29, 2011 - 2:22pm; tagged BitchTapes, royal wedding.
When I was a teen, my mom would (jokingly?) advise me to tell boys who got too fresh that I was saving myself for Prince William and thus needed to preserve my virgin status. Though it never came to that, I've always had a soft spot for His Royal Cuteness, and I even tried to stay up last night to watch the live wedding coverage (I fell asleep somewhere in between Kate getting out of the Rolls and the "I will" portion of the ceremony). Since the wedding mix has been done already, I figured a royal-themed BitchTapes was in order to commemorate things. Prince William, this one's for you.

The Wedding March: Nice Day For a White Wedding

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 29, 2011 - 12:33pm; tagged great britain, kate middleton, media, prince william, royal wedding.
Prince William and Kate Middleton

The vows have been said, the register signed and the happy couple kissed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in front of screaming crowds. For those of us who didn't score an invite to the most exclusive wedding of the decade, the media was on hand to guide us through the day—with a depressingly predictable side order of sexism.

The Wedding March: Embracing the Trashy

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 27, 2011 - 11:51am; tagged kate middleton, pippa middleton, prince william, royal wedding.
As the day draws ever nearer, and even the most patriotic pundits run out of things to say about the ceremony itself, it’s time to turn our attention to what comes afterwards. The significance of the event cannot be underestimated, and although none of us will be privy to what the newlyweds get up to behind closed doors, it doesn’t stop us speculating. I speak, of course, of the reception.

The Wedding March: Size Doesn't Matter

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 25, 2011 - 10:41am; tagged body image, food politics, kate middleton, prince william, royal wedding, weight.
With the whole world watching, it’s understandable that Kate Middleton wants to look her best on her wedding day. But her recent weight loss has provided the press with its favorite topic: deconstructing women’s bodies.

The Wedding March: To Obey, Or Not To Obey

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 22, 2011 - 12:07pm; tagged kate middleton, marriage, obedience, prince william, royal wedding, wedding vows.
If rumors are true—and with this couple, it’s only ever 50:50—then Kate Middleton will not promise to obey her husband in next week’s ceremony. When even the Archbishop of Canterbury thinks it’s a bit old-fashioned, you know it’s a tradition worth discarding.

The Wedding March: Mummy Dearest

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 20, 2011 - 11:56am; tagged carole middleton, kate middleton, motherhood, prince william, royal wedding.
With little over a week to go, it’s hard to imagine anything stopping William and Kate walking down the aisle—but that wasn't always the case. Up until their engagement was announced, it was assumed that one woman stood in Kate’s way: her mother.

The Wedding March: And Baby Makes Trouble

Social Commentary post by Kaite Welsh on April 18, 2011 - 11:25am; tagged classism, kate middleton, primogeniture, prince andrew, prince william, princess anne, royal family, royal wedding, sexism.
It’s a problem faced by most straight couples—you haven’t even tied the knot yet, and everyone is wondering whether you’ll have children. Or in this case, whether your eldest child will inherit the crown if it’s a girl. Like the nursery rhyme says: first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a debate about primogeniture that would overhaul the entire line of succession.

The Wedding March: The Princess Problem

At a time when young graduates struggle to find work, one former art history student’s patchy résumé shouldn’t be headline news. Unless of course, you happen to be Kate Middleton.
