I'm a big psychobilly fan, but often find that people don't know much about the genre. So, behold: my psychobilly mixtape!
Rockabilly women such as Wanda Jackson and Sparkle Moore were often considered daring and rebellious, and so it only makes sense that they would inspire other musicians. Psychobilly derives from their style, as well the early punk rock scene featuring rockabilly style guitar playing and punk rock speed. The genre exaggerates on the audacity of rockbilly stars like Jackson and Moore, plus layers on additional styles from girl groups and even metal. Pyschobilly bands typically turn to horror and sci-fi B movies and a camp aesthetic for inspiration. Put on your creepers and Doc Martens and check out some of these great psychobilly jams.
Wanda Jackson is loud. Her brash voice snarls at the listener as much as it preens her own ego, lashing out at lackluster lovers and glorifying her own sexual prowess. The "queen of rockabilly" owned the raunchy music of 50s and 60s youth after being turned onto the genre by none other than former flame Elvis Presley. Whether she was the first woman to actually step behind the mic and sing rockabilly, like the legend says, Wanda Jackson's still-strong career spearheaded women's involvement in rock music.
It seems like just yesterday we were transitioning from winter to spring... but now summer is here! And with it comes a steep, almost exponential increase in readily available advice on how to hate your body, courtesy of the magazine rack. There's plenty of instructions on how to flatten your stomach (don't breathe) and mandates to buy rhinestone-encrusted flip-flops and expensive bathing suits that won't fit you. Glamour even has the "best swimsuits for every body"... as long as your body closely resembles any of their three virtually identical cover models. Yes, these magazines are indeed useful in the summertime - they can be used as fuel for beach bonfires or wrapped around greasy hot dogs straight off the grill. You can use them to disguise that box full of fireworks, make a distinguished paper fan, create cute little bowls or coasters... the possibilities are endless, really.
