Four Fabulous Video Band-Aids YOU need NOW!

Video post by Kat Kimberley on February 16, 2010 - 2:30pm; tagged news media, pop culture, tv women, videos.
I’m having one of those days. The type that can’t be improved by consuming ridiculous amounts of caffeine or chocolate. (I tried.) Lately, each time I turn on the news, my stomach begins to ache and I feel like I’m gonna hurl. It’s days like these when the slumping economy, plastic television pundits, and big bank bonuses really bum me out.

Are you like me? Mainstream media got you down? Sick of Edwards? Tired of Tiger? Need a break from the shallow, male dominated 24-hour-blab-fest? Do you crave provocative remarks from women who can lift you up and make you feel good (the kind of healthy escapism that won’t result in substance abuse or an std?) Well don’t despair, because I’ve got a few media feel-better-band-aids...

Illinois Man Pleads Guilty to Stalking ESPN's Erin Andrews

Sports post by Anna Clark on December 16, 2009 - 10:09am; tagged espn, law, media, misogyny, news media, sexism, sexual harassment, sports, stalking, women in news.
ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, with her attorney Marshall Grossman, after facing her convicted stalker Michael Barrett for the first time.
In some ways, the news is anti-climactic: Michael David Barrett, an insurance executive of Illinois, pled guilty yesterday to the interstate stalking of ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews.

More specifically, Barrett admitted to buying information about Andrews over the internet; traveling to follow Andrews; staying in three hotel rooms next to hers (the hotels told him which room was hers); twice filming videos of Andrews while she was naked through the door's peephole; posting those videos online; and trying to sell the videos to TMZ.

It's just another chapter in the long, long story of the objectification of Erin Andrews.

But what stands out about yesterday's hearing is that for once, it gave the 31-year-old sportscaster the chance to speak for herself -- and what it is like for her to pursue a job she loves while navigating fierce misogyny and harassment.

Beaker Bitch: Freak Outs, Not Facts, Dominate Abortion Talk in Healthcare Debate

Social Commentary post by Sarah Mirk on August 15, 2009 - 6:54pm; tagged abortion, abortion rights, death panels, Health care, healthcare reform, John Boehner, news media, Obama, obama healthcare plan, pro-choice, pro-life, women's health.
The healthcare debate this week has certainly been a lot of fingerpointing. In an effort to quash false rumors surrounding Obama's new healthcare plan (please let's never discuss the phrase "death panels" again), the White House went so far as to launch a "reality check" website. But one issue that's missing from the White House site is abortion. Despite the lack of an official White House debunk, the public dialogue on abortion has been just as packed with misinformation and exaggeration as the rest of the national conversation about healthcare reform.

Conservative websites are running with the National Right to Life group's headline that healthcare reform will be biggest expansion of abortion rights since Roe v. Wade. "Condition Red!" flashes the National Right to Life website.

That idea is aided by misleading statements from mainstream politicians. Representative John Boehner (R-Ohio) penned a piece in the National Review spelling out his take on Obama's healthcare plan:
"Fact: The bill as currently written will allow the federal government to classify abortion as an "essential benefit" — a health-care right that would be guaranteed to all Americans. This will make it illegal for health-care providers nationwide — even Catholic and religious-based hospitals with missions that reflect a fundamental moral objection to the killing of the unborn — to provide anything less than abortion on demand for anyone who seeks it."

But when the Denver Post ran a health care fact check, they showed that Boehner's "fact" is actually false. The Post explains that Obama's current health care plan does not override the federal law that bans Medicaid from paying for abortions except in cases involving rape, incest or when the mother's life is in danger. An amendment pushed by Lois Capps (D-CA) allows public and private healthcare plans to cover abortions in other cases, but they can't use federal dollars.
