New Thao w/ the Get Down Stay Down Video –"When We Swam"

Music post by Kelsey Wallace on October 15, 2009 - 9:46am; tagged Kill Rock Stars, Know Better Learn Faster, music videos, Thao Nguyen, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, When We Swam.
Lately we've (or at least I've) been a little Thao-crazy. I interviewed her for the Consumption Junction podcast (where she offers something special to Bitch podcast listeners, so check it out!), she was a fave on the latest episode of Bitch Popaganda, and (shhh) she just may play a role in the next issue of the magazine. What can we say? Thao rules! And so does her new video, so check it out after the jump (oh, and you eagle-eyed readers just may be able to spot a Bitch Media staff member or two in the crowd – I said we were Thao-crazy)!

Sorry to not post the video in the teaser – it was posting as a wonky size and the player wouldn't let me change it. Click through to see the good-sized version!

Beyonce Isn't Afraid to Get Ugly on New Track

Love / Shove post by Ehren Gresehover on January 2, 2009 - 3:21pm; tagged Beyonce, Diva, music videos.

A lot has been said (including on this blog) about the sort of affable empowerment that is ubiquitous in Beyonce's chart-busting hits, especially on her latest record, I Am... Sasha Fierce, but the third single, "Diva" is more "fierce" than what you might expect.   More after the jump.

Resisting and organizing through creative media

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen on June 5, 2008 - 4:42pm; tagged AMC 2008, classism, community organizing, Detroit, documentary, gentrification, hip-hop, music, music videos, racism.

I'm back in Portland, still processing and reflecting on my trip to the Midwest. I'll be posting more about that soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share this video about displacement/gentrification in Detroit, featuring Detroit-based female hip-hop artist, Invincible. It's a beautiful example of how powerful a story becomes when different forms of media are combined.

Images of Femininity in the Video Age
Premiere

Like some grizzled old-timer sitting on the porch of the homestead talking about the good old days, I think back to the first time I saw MTV and pity the prepubescents of today who didn’t have the luck to see, as I did, the wonder of MTV when it first aired. I was eight years old, alone in my living room, and somehow I knew that I was witnessing a tremendous event: a connection with something that just wasn’t accessible through after-school cartoons or Gilligan’s Island reruns.
