Nona Hendryx broke into the music world as one third of legendary group Labelle. Hendryx, Patti LaBelle and Sarah Dash became known for their groundbreaking ability to make glam-funk music, as well as their larger-than-life stage shows and glittery space-aged costumes.

After three gold albums and number-one hit "Lady Marmalade", the band went their separate ways, and Nona Hendryx began to establish herself as an amazingly versatile and creative artist.

Who better to start a band with than your sister? Today's BitchTapes highlights lots of sisters who have decided to brave the music industry together. Enjoy!

Luddites beware!
For my first BitchTapes as the resident New Media Intern, it seemed only appropriate that my to compile some of my favorite songs about just that: media and technology!

We've been reminiscing a bit at Bitch HQ lately about Free to Be... You and Me. Remember that jam? Even if, like me, it aired before you were born, you're probably the product of its lovey message in some way or another. If not, it's not too late. Check out this video clip of Rosey Grier singing "It's Alright to Cry." Do it! It inspired this week's BitchTapes!



A powerful message, especially coming from a masculine-seeming type like Grier. We all know that men aren't "supposed" to cry. But Grier isn't the only man who'll admit to shedding a tear now and then. For evidence of this, here's a mix of songs by men, about crying. Track list after the jump!

My mind is seemingly always on overdrive. If I don't have constant (over)stimulation, I am not a very fun person to be around. It's not surprising, then, that my taste in music generally reflects my mindset. It seems like just yesterday we were transitioning from winter to spring... but now summer is here! And with it comes a steep, almost exponential increase in readily available advice on how to hate your body, courtesy of the magazine rack. There's plenty of instructions on how to flatten your stomach (don't breathe) and mandates to buy rhinestone-encrusted flip-flops and expensive bathing suits that won't fit you. Glamour even has the "best swimsuits for every body"... as long as your body closely resembles any of their three virtually identical cover models. Yes, these magazines are indeed useful in the summertime - they can be used as fuel for beach bonfires or wrapped around greasy hot dogs straight off the grill. You can use them to disguise that box full of fireworks, make a distinguished paper fan, create cute little bowls or coasters... the possibilities are endless, really.
