Body Double (Standard): The celebrity profiles of Megan Fox and Beyoncé

Social Commentary post by Kelsey Wallace on January 16, 2013 - 10:35pm; tagged Beyonce, Esquire, GQ, mainstream media, Megan Fox.
Men’s magazines are dubious during the best of times, but so far 2013 is bringing out their worst. Last week, eyebrows were raised by this flimsy GQ profile of Beyoncé Knowles, where author Amy Wallace says Bey's “as hot as fish grease.” This week, the same eyebrows are hitting the ceiling over Esquire’s bizarre, condescending profile of Megan Fox, in which Stephen “Victim of Feminine Contempt” Marche simultaneously exalts and pities Fox for her “bombshell” good looks.

Lady Liquor: I'll Tell You When I've Had Enough!

Social Commentary post by christenmccurdy on January 11, 2013 - 11:47am; tagged alcohol, alcoholism, drinking while female, mainstream media, media critique.

Stories of self-censorship in the media are sadly common; here's one that's relevant to what I tried to do with this series. Years ago, Barry Lopez addressed an environmental philosophy class at my alma mater and I cornered him later to ask him some questions about journalism. He said it can be a constant fight to get good, varied content published, and as an example told me that a writer friend had had an essay pulled from a mainstream magazine that's well-respected for its reporting and commentary, and which has a pretty highbrow, progressive slant. The essay talked about alcoholism from a personal perspective; it was yanked because one of the magazine's major sponsors, a vodka distiller, was none too thrilled with the writer's discussion of the dark side of drinking. Bitch's commitment to providing a forum for non-mainstream voices and perspectives meant that I was allowed to talk about alcohol from whatever perspective I chose – good, bad, indifferent or amused – and I am enormously grateful for that.

Lady Business: New Female CEOs, Coming Right Up

Social Commentary post by J. Victoria Sanders on May 29, 2012 - 12:51pm; tagged businesswomen, corporate work, mainstream media, women's work, work.

A recent Catalyst survey of Fortune 500 companies found that in 2011, women accounted for 14.1% of executive officer positions. They are just 7.5% of top earners in those position, but there are apparently a lot of women being groomed for leadership in the "corporate pipeline."

The Biotic Woman: What Natural Disaster Means for Chilean Women

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on March 1, 2010 - 9:30am; tagged Chile, gender, international aid, mainstream media, natural disaster, poverty, Sexual Violence, The Biotic Woman, women's health, women's rights.
Natural disasters are gendered, with women facing aid discrepancies at every step of the recovery process. Particularly in areas that are already impoverished, there are simply fewer opportunities to rebuild after a disaster. If women are already largely shut out of the more lucrative jobs, this continues the cycle of poverty. Women are often the ones overburdened with domestic responsibilities and largely responsible for caring for children and the elderly, which is also exacerbated by catastrophe. Often overlooked are reports of sexual violence following a disaster, but much like rape and sexual torture are weapons of war, they are also employed in the aftermath of disasters, connected with looting and other violent crime that rises during such unrest.

Science Says: "Yay for Vibrators!"

Science post by Sarah Mirk on July 3, 2009 - 12:24pm; tagged Dan Savage, female sexuality, Fox News, gynecological exam, mainstream media, masturbation, new york times, sex in media, sexual health, vibrators, women's health.
Well it's about damn time! Though physicians and therapists (not just Dan Savage, we're talking mainstream doctors) have been known for decades that vibrator use can be great for sexual health, there's never been a scientific study to back up the common knowledge. Until now!

Trojan funded a national research project to determine the extent and impact of vibrator use and la-di-da, look what they found: not only do a majority of American women use vibrators, they're happier for it!

According to the surveys of 2,056 women and 1,047 men ages 18-60, a whopping 53 percent of women (and 45 percent of men) say they use a vibrator - a quarter of those in the last month. Women who use vibrators were more likely to say they were sexually happy and more likely to get gynecological exams.

Deconstructing Bunk Reporting in 5 Easy Steps
Wired

British scientists have uncovered the truth behind one of modern culture’s greatest mysteries: why little girls play with pink toys. Is it because toy companies flood whole store aisles with the color? Or because well-meaning relatives shower girl babies with pink blankets and clothing? Nope. According to the men in lab coats, it’s purely biological.
