Ladies! Liquor! Ladies and Liquor!

Social Commentary post by christenmccurdy on November 1, 2012 - 1:35pm; tagged Cat Marnell, charlie sheen, history, katy perry, Lindsay Lohan, liquor, recovery, suffrage, temperance, the politics of pleasure, the War on Drugs, women in the public sphere.

Welcome to Lady Liquor, where, for the next two months, I'll be writing about the relationship between, well, ladies and liquor. Primarily. I'm interested in the ways women's attitudes about drinking -- and society's attitudes about women who drink -- have shaped history and pop culture. But it's pretty much impossible to talk about those things without also talking about other mind-altering substances (I'm looking at you, War on Drugs); I'd also be remiss not to talk about the relationship between booze and other social justice movements -- like the gay rights movement, which actually started in a bar.

Mazel tov, Katy Perry, for being named Billboard’s Woman of the Year for 2012. But for RetroPop purposes, who is the Woman of ALL THE YEARS?

RetroPop: Jolting "Wide Awake" With Katy Perry, Maya Angelou, and Sylvia Plath

Music post by Brianna Goldberg on August 28, 2012 - 10:02am; tagged katy perry, Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath.

Katy Perry, Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath

Today, the mash-ups that came to mind—Katy Perry, Maya Angelou, and Sylvia Plath—are a tiny smidge more controversial than usual, but all I mean to do is share some works that I believe have echoes of each other and start a discussion. Just a bit of a Tuesday shakeup. Are you ready for some shaking? Shukka shukka, here we go!

Visi(bi)lity: Performing Bisexuality

Sex and Sexuality post by Carrie Nelson on April 3, 2012 - 10:00am; tagged bisexual, bisexual visibility, bisexuality, I Kissed A Girl, I Wish I Was Gay, Jessica Lowndes, katy perry, music, music videos, performance, performativity, pop music, Visi(bi)lity.

An extreme close-up of a young woman’s smiling face, as she dances in a room with other women. Disembodied heads, arms, and torsos are visible. The dancing that’s going on looks sexual in nature. There are few songs I like less than Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl.” I dislike most of her music (that skit she did with Elmo, however, is adorable), but “I Kissed A Girl” bothers me most of all. You’d think such a song would be tailor-made for me—after all, I have, in fact, kissed girls and liked it! But it’s really not a song for me, or for any other queer woman (even though I know queer women who like the song). It’s a song for straight men who have “lesbian” fantasies in which femme women make out with each other but don’t present any actual threat to male sexuality and dominance. It’s a song for straight women who find the idea of kissing other women to be a “scandalous” and fun way of entertaining men, but who ultimately aren’t romantically or sexually attracted to other women. It’s a song about false, constructed, performed bisexuality, and it isn’t doing anything to help the acceptance of non-monosexual folks.

She Pop: The Red and The White--Some Thoughts On Taylor Swift and Katy Perry

Music post by SadyDoyle on October 14, 2009 - 2:52pm; tagged double-sided coins, katy perry, responses, swiftmania '09, taylor swift.

Dear Lord, Taylor Swift fans! I cannot keep up with you! Witness just a sampling of the very angry comments on my Taylor Swift post of last week:

Personally I think she is kind of silly, but I can understand why so
many people like [Taylor]. Especially teen girls. She tells girls that its
okay to wear "T-shirts and sneakers" instead of "High heals and short
skirts". She is an alternative to the super pornified world we live in.

And:

at least taylor doesnt cater to some stupid male fantasy where you can
only have sex for mens fantasies. What about the Katy Perry's and the
Megan Fox's who are only sexual for the pleasure of men. "I love sex, I
like it 24/7, but only with a MAN that i love, one noght stands make me
sick, they're gross, unless its with a girl while my man watches!".
Perpetuating sexist girl on girl male fantasies and marketing them as
objects to sell, the girl on girl thing is a way of life for some
people and they are objectifying it. Not to mention that girls like
Megan get huge amounts of Plastic Surgery have a career based on their
looks and then call themselves feminists.
