End of Gender: Argentina Grants Gender Self-Determination

Social Commentary post by Malic White on May 15, 2012 - 1:48pm; tagged Argentina, government, Identity, law, transgender.

Last week, Argentina gave citizens the freedom to change their legal and physical gender without having to undergo medical, psychiatric, or judicial procedures. Along with eliminating patronizing barriers to swapping an "M" for an "F" on a driver's license, the law gives Argentinians a freedom you won't find anywhere else: gender self-determination.

Preacher's Daughter: Why Do We Have to Be "Born This Way"?

Music post by Kristin Rawls on October 20, 2011 - 11:42am; tagged dance music, electoral politics, female pop stars, feminism and pop culture, homophobia, Identity, identity politics, Lady Gaga, LGBT, lgbt rights, lgbtq rights, science, The Bible.

Yesterday, Republican Presidential hopeful Herman Cain clashed with Piers Morgan about whether or not people are born gay. Here's the video:

The important thing to know is that Cain sets out saying that "homosexuality is a sin" because of his "Biblical beliefs," but Morgan quickly steers the conversation into "born this way" territory, outraged that Cain won't concede his point. Cain's response: "What does science show? You show me evidence other than opinion, and you might cause me to reconsider that... Where's the evidence?"

Mad World: Thanks!

Mad World post by Kelsey Wallace on October 27, 2010 - 12:37pm; tagged advertising, gender, Identity, Mad World.

As many of you know, we've been hosting Mad World here on the Bitch blogs (and around town) since March, and we've had a great time discussing advertising, gender, and identity as a part of this series. However, as Johnny so eloquently said to Pony Boy, "nothing gold can stay." (OK, so he was quoting Robert Frost, but the cuteness of the young Ralph Macchio means we're going with the remediated version.) Our Mad World series is coming to a close, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop with analyzing ads. We'd never do that—it's our mission to bring you a feminist response to pop culture!

Racy Thoughts: Little Boxes, Little Boxes

TV post by Alex_Alvarez on September 14, 2010 - 1:17pm; tagged Ethnicity, Identity, Jersey Shore, JWoww, race, Snooki.
Anyone who caught last week's episode of Jersey Shore likely noticed a rather interesting conversation between Jenni "JWoww" Farley and Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi on the topic of race. At one point in the show, the two women discuss the possibility of going to a nude beach, then move on to the topic of wacky things they have their respective bucket lists, like Snooki's desire to try bungee jumping. JWoww, philosopher and gentlelady, calls this a "white person thing," which prompts a seemingly annoyed Snooki to respond, "I'm not white... I'm tan."
