In the Frame: Great Artists Always Male? I Demand a Recount!

Art and Design post by Polly Allen on November 1, 2011 - 11:40am; tagged art, art history, gender roles, Tamara de Lempicka, the female nude, Venus of Willendorf.
Feminism and art aren't as closely linked as they should be, but I want to change that. Too many women are excluded from being called "the great artists," as if we require a separate category. Well, I want to give Bitch readers and art lovers everywhere a reason to celebrate strong females in the art world.

No Kidding: What About The Men? Pt. 1

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on March 10, 2011 - 12:00pm; tagged childfree, gender, gender roles, No Kidding, permanent birth control, reproductive health, reproductive justice, reproductive rights, vasectomy.
When I talk about women's choices regarding children, pregnancy, and childbirth, someone usually asks about the men. Last month, I interviewed half a dozen men of varying ages, backgrounds, and life experience about why they never want to have children. A number of them had considered getting (or had already gotten) a vasectomy. The number one reason? It's easier (from a surgical/recovery standpoint) and cheaper than any option women have.

No Kidding: Where Are The Childfree Role Models?

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on March 7, 2011 - 2:23pm; tagged childfree, childless, Choice, gender roles, How Do You Know, motherhood, No Kidding, Parenting.
Some women I've written about before, celebs like Jennifer Aniston, sidestep the issue all the time instead of owning their ambivalence (or however they feel! Just own it!). Barbara Walters and Oprah talked about how it is a difficult thing. So why don't we hear more women talking about the flip side of having kids—or rather, why don't we have more proud childfree role models out there?

No Kidding: What We Talk About When We Talk About Not Having Kids

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on February 1, 2011 - 12:34pm; tagged childfree, childless, children, gender roles, kids, natalism, No Kidding, Parenting.
I’m here to talk about social pressure to procreate, media attention on multi-child families, tabloid obsession with childless women and pregnancy, and voluntarily female sterilization.

Beyond No Homo: Calling Shenanigans on "Gender-Bending" Reality Show

TV post by Kjerstin Johnson on December 9, 2010 - 4:10pm; tagged gender roles, heterosexism, reality tv.
A photograph of a television with a bullet hole in it I'd be lying if I said that when I heard about a reality TV casting call asking "Do you bend gender roles? Do you go against the norm?" I truly believed a show was going to focus on folks who reject prescribed ideas of gender and sexuality. But just in case there was a show that wanted to feature, to make visible, people who go against the grain when it comes to gender and sexuality (dare I say...gender outlaws?), I investigated.

Here's the description for Straight as a Board:

Meat is for what now? Marketing veganism the wrong way

Books post by Kjerstin Johnson on June 3, 2010 - 2:26pm; tagged gender roles, masculinity, veganism.
the cover of Meat is for Pussies. The cover is pretty minimal, with an overturned silhouette of a cow resting at the very bottom of the page.
You're looking at the cover of a new book by John Joseph, New York native and author of The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon. Besides grimacing, my other first reaction to the book was Malori Maloney's assessment of Skinny Bastard - the male-marketed follow-up to the "vegan/animal rights manifesto wrapped in chick-lit veneer" Skinny Bitch. Malori wrote, "What could be an awesome vegan manifesto is so rife with gendered language, sexist commentary and an apparent obsession with physical appearance over healthy living that potential positive and/or helpful messages get clouded." Having not read Joseph's book, I can't claim this is entirely true about Meat is for Pussies...but something about that title tells me it is.

Cleats or Ballet Shoes?

Sports post by Jonanna Widner on April 24, 2009 - 1:22pm; tagged dance, football, gender roles.

Most people, regardless of gender, are born with 206 bones. Experts say human beings have between 640 and 850 muscles (they’re so difficult to count, a precise tally is impossible). Boy, girl, and in-between, we all share the same number of eyes, appendages, nerve endings. We have the same instincts—if we touch a hot stove, we pull away; if something is thrown unexpectedly at us, we duck.
