“I swear, Angel Olsen was just staring at me… I wonder what she’s thinking,” I whispered to my friend during Angel Olsen’s show August 3rd at Pickathon, a three-day music festival held just outside Portland, Oregon.
I was first introduced to Sharon Van Etten’s music when I moved to Portland for college. I remember hearing “Give Out” off of Tramp in my friend’s car as the two of us were having a hard time with love. “You're the reason why I'll move to the city/You're why I'll need to leave” were the words that felt stuck to my ribs for days.
Van Etten has a real knack for lines that drive to the core of your love troubles. Her latest album, Are We There, is a beautiful example of how her music only improves with time.
Thousands of people attended weekly “Moral Monday” protests at the North Carolina state capital this year, speaking up against voter ID laws, for protecting abortion access, and for decreasing income inequality. Season six is my favorite season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I like the dark themes, and I like seeing Willow grow up and mature as a result of her grief. (I also like the musical episode.) Recently, I was talking over Buffy when my friend, Bitch contributor Emily Manuel, reminded me about the surprising musical accompaniment to that season's final moments. After a string of EPs and self-released singles, Brighton's Peggy Sue finally have an LP out!!….. in the UK. Fossils and Other Phantoms will be released in the US in June, but if you're in Europe, you can probably see this soul folk wonderfulness live! Multi-instrumentalist original members Rosa Slade and Katy Young have absolutely gorgeous voices, and their live shows are supposed to be amazing. If you've never heard Peggy Sue (formerly Peggy Sue and the Pirates), start off with Body Parts & First Aid (two EPs put together on one record).
