BitchTapes: Female Pop Stars of the Early 90s

Music post by Kelsey Wallace, Submitted by Kelsey Wallace on November 18, 2011 - 12:10pm; tagged BitchTapes, celine dion, female pop stars, Janet Jackson, madonna, Mariah Carey, paula abdul, pop music, Vanessa L. Williams, Whitney Houston.
Best of Bitchtapes! Here's a Bitchtapes from the past we're re-posting because it's too jam-worthy to forget!

The other day, while singing "Forever Your Girl" in the shower (don't judge – you know that song rules) I started thinking about the awesome female pop stars of the early 90s. Now, full disclosure: I was born in 1982, so I began to develop my own taste (or lack thereof) in music during that golden era. Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Whitney Houston – these women taught me and my tween (though we didn't call it that back then) friends what it meant to truly rock out as strong women. Sure, our side ponytails, multicolored keds, and leggings may not have said "Empowered Women" to the kids on the playground, but as we jammed out to "Rhythm Nation" on our Sony Walkmen our veins coursed with the power that only a true Female Pop Star can provide.

The early 90s were full of said Female Pop Stars, so without further adieu, I bring you BitchTapes: Female Pop Stars of the Early 90s Edition. Throw that hair into a side ponytail and let's do this.

Track listing and (I couldn't help it) videos after the jump!

Preacher's Daughter: Why Do We Have to Be "Born This Way"?

Music post by Kristin Rawls, Submitted by Kristin Rawls on October 20, 2011 - 11:42am; tagged dance music, electoral politics, female pop stars, feminism and pop culture, homophobia, Identity, identity politics, Lady Gaga, LGBT, lgbt rights, lgbtq rights, science, The Bible.

Yesterday, Republican Presidential hopeful Herman Cain clashed with Piers Morgan about whether or not people are born gay. Here's the video:

The important thing to know is that Cain sets out saying that "homosexuality is a sin" because of his "Biblical beliefs," but Morgan quickly steers the conversation into "born this way" territory, outraged that Cain won't concede his point. Cain's response: "What does science show? You show me evidence other than opinion, and you might cause me to reconsider that... Where's the evidence?"

B-Sides: "What the Hell" Do You Make of This?

Music post by Deb Jannerson, Submitted by Deb Jannerson on March 29, 2011 - 10:47am; tagged female pop stars, music videos, polyamory.

What the Hell single coverPerhaps inspired by her recent divorce from Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, "What the Hell" describes kissing various people and blowing off societal expectations. Now, the song's not without its problems. There's the "crazy" issue, and the lyrics are addressed to an unhappy main squeeze, which begs the question of how consensual their non-monogamy really is. Still, as with the Lou Christie classic "Lightnin' Strikes," I hear it as an exploration of dating around rather than a glorification of infidelity. "What the Hell" gave me the same flutter as Cher's 1998 smash "Believe," which burst onto the radio between songs about miserable devotion with the revelation "Maybe I'm too good for you." Yes, Avril's latest got my stamp of approval.

But then I saw the video.
