B-Sides: RYAT Girl (and Guy)

Music post by Kjerstin Johnson on April 12, 2011 - 3:01pm; tagged Electronic Music, women in music.
a man and a woman lie next to each other on a gold, sparkly background. the man has his eyes blindfolded with a gold piece of the cloth. the woman has her eyes open. she has a golden bronze shimmer on her face. Christina Ryat has been making electronic music as RYAT since 2006 (fans of Electo Feminisms take note!). She recently teamed up with Tim Conley and their debut album Avant Gold came out last month from Obvious Bandits.

B-Sides: Video Dance Party!

As much as I adore music videos at dance parties, watching choreographed dance moves on a giant screen in public typically does one of two things to me: infuses my limbs with rhythmic possibilities (rare), or yanks the slippery beat from under my dance shoes (less rare). Sometimes if I’m not in a dancing mood (or able to shake it in my current location) watching someone else dance provides a kind of psychic fulfillment. I hope Austra and CocknBullKid’s new singles give you just that! Directly after sits a sedentary vogue-free video by Planningtorock. Apart from inviting you to a video dance, this B-Sides provides hope for the swarms of PTR fans who, like myself, have been chewing their nails impatiently for five years on the edge of the dance floor waiting for her sophomore release!

B-Sides: Stellar OM Source

Music post by Katie Waldeck on June 2, 2010 - 11:50am; tagged Electronic Music, music, Stellar OM Source.

My mind is seemingly always on overdrive. If I don't have constant (over)stimulation, I am not a very fun person to be around. It's not surprising, then, that my taste in music generally reflects my mindset. If you think it sounds like I need to take a chill pill, you're right; and I've found the perfect chill pill in the gorgeous ambient electronic music of Stellar OM Source of Stellar OM Source.

BitchTapes: That's Gay

Audio post by Sara Reihani on November 20, 2009 - 1:41pm; tagged BitchTapes, Bryan Safi, Electronic Music, gay, music, pop music, That's Gay.
Bryan Safi... total dreamboat, am I right, ladeez? I sort of wish he wasn't gay, but if that were the case, we wouldn't have the excellent "That's Gay" segment on CurrentTV's brilliant infoMania. So here's a Bryan Safi-inspired mix of catchy songs to help you blur the gender lines and celebrate the sexuality spectrum. Put on your rainbow suspenders, donate to Stop 8 and rock out with your softpack out.

B-sides: Grandmothers of electronic music, Part 1--Delia Derbyshire

Music post by Briar Levit on October 27, 2009 - 11:55am; tagged BBC, Electronic Music, Radiophonic Workshop.

I love electronic music—a genre that had its mainstream heyday in the 90s with a small resurgence in the form of electro-clash in the early naughts. Throughout my years listening, I've gathered quite a collection with my favorites including: Aphex Twin, Plaid, µ-Ziq, Boards of Canada, Bogdan Raczynski, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher and on. Guess how many of those musicians are women? Zero. Sure. I like Mira Calix and Ellen Alien...but they are rare in their field.

So when a friend posted a mash-up on his Facebook page featuring one of the early innovators in electronic music, who happened to also be a woman, I was intrigued.

Video Power Pack: thecocknbullkid Edition

Music post by Jonanna Widner on September 9, 2009 - 10:36am; tagged Anita Blay, Electronic Music, female musicians, music videos, soul music, thecocknbullkid.
Damn, Anita Blay is badass!

For one thing, you can tell just by looking at her that she’s an odd duck. She is prone, for instance, to wearing poof-y shouldered ’80s jackets and things with polka dots. She claims to have intentionally gained weight because, as she put it in a recent Guardian article, "I don't want to be 'pretty'. I don't aspire to be like the Pussycat Dolls…I want to be an artist who people can believe in." But it’s Blay’s songs that really do it. The twentysomething British songwriter goes by the name thecocknbullkid, and she has created her own musical world, one filled with equal parts quirky soul-pop (Macy Gray-ish), zingy synth-pop (Yaz-ish), and lo-fi computer zings (Midnight-Star-ish).
