In The Frame: Life, Death, and Other Lessons Learned from Art

Art and Design post by Polly Allen on December 28, 2011 - 2:00pm; tagged death, female artists, female photographers, Fiona Banner, Marina Abramovic, performance art, photography, Sally Mann, taboo, textual art.
For me, art isn't just about finding something pretty or intelligent, or wishing I could paint as well as someone else. It's about looking at a piece and knowing that it's taught you something and you feel better for having seen it. You understand the world a little better afterwards, and you can't wait to rave about it to your friends. Here are three lessons I've learned from artists that I'd like to pass on:

Preacher's Daughter: "We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest" in Wake of Troy Davis' Judicial Lynching

Music post by Kristin Rawls on September 22, 2011 - 11:12am; tagged Angela Davis, Billie Holiday, civil rights, Civil Rights Movement, criminal justice system, death, protest, Protest Songs, The Supreme Court.

One might have hoped that, by this hour, the very sight of chains on black flesh, or the very sight of chains, would be so intolerable a sight for the American people, and so unbearable a memory, that they would themselves spontaneously rise up and strike off the manacles. But no, they appear to glory in their chains; now, more than ever, they appear to measure their safety in chains and corpses. -James Baldwin to Angela Davis.*

Billie Holiday, "Strange Fruit" (lyrics)

Preacher's Daughter: Love in the Time of Apocalypse

Music post by Kristin Rawls on September 16, 2011 - 10:34am; tagged death, Emmy, feminism and pop culture, romance, songs.

I agree that apocalyptic imagery has figured prominently in the public imagination in 2011 in part as a result of the anxieties of this moment in time. Nowhere has this been more evident than in songs about love, in which said love is either a distraction from or metaphor for the end times. First, let's take a look at Aussie singer, Lenka's "At the End of the World (lyrics here):

Preacher's Daughter: Mourning and Spirituality in Steve Reich's Response to 9/11

Music post by Kristin Rawls on September 14, 2011 - 10:46am; tagged composers, death, grief, mourning, New York City, Preacher's Daughter, religion.

Responses to September 11 have been fraught from the start. As I thought through the problem of grief over the weekend, I was gratified that NPR posted the new work by minimalist musicians Steve Reich and the Kronos Quartet, WTC/9/11. Here's a sample:

BitchTapes: Gone Too Soon

Music post by Deb Jannerson on August 5, 2011 - 12:00pm; tagged BitchTapes, death, musicians.

It's no secret that musicians often die far too quickly. In this Only the Good Die Young, Part II mix, I recognize some of the artists we've lost in the past twenty years (a few of whom even sang about early death). All we can do is miss them.

Track list after the jump!

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Deb Jannerson on May 6, 2011 - 1:43pm; tagged anti-war, Canada, death, Islam, media coverage, mother's day, movies, Parenting, Prop 8, reproductive rights, trans identity, Twitter.

Stop. Link time. (It had to be said.)

  • For RH Reality Check, Jaime Jenett bravely discusses her experiences as a non-biological lesbian parent of an ill child while enduring the daily hurt of Prop 8 stickers... and makes eloquent efforts to communicate with those who don't believe she deserves rights (reposted at AlterNet).
  • Mother Jones offers advice on how to wade through media coverage of Osama bin Laden's death.
  • Jane Laplain of Questioning Transphobia talks about trans* identity and the one-word-or-two-words question... and why it matters.
  • ColorLines shares the Center for Reproductive Rights video "They're Coming for Roe."
  • Shakesville provides an open thread on the results of Canada's election.
  • Racialicious reports on the release of the book I Speak for Myself: American Women on Being Muslim, edited by Maria Ebrahimji and Zahra Suratwala, and featuring writing by Muslimah Media Watch editor Fatemeh Fakhraie.
  • More feminist than Mulan? At Bitch Flicks, Whitney Mollenhauer takes notes on the film Tangled. Thoughts?
  • Bitch contributor EvMaroon writes a letter to his future child about the United States of America's history and the death of bin Laden.
  • At the Huffington Post, Stephanie Green praises the new adaptation of Jane Eyre. Have you seen it? What are your feelings?
  • Jos from Feministing presents an anti-war poem from Palestinian and US-American poet and activist, Suheir Hammad.
  • Monica at TransGriot reminds readers to make their nominations for the 2011 Black Weblog Awards by Saturday!
  • Bitch contributor Jarrah Hodge comments on Twitter culture at Gender Focus.
  • Ms. has a few suggestions on how to spend your Mother's Day weekend.
  • And speaking of mothers, check out the Mama's Day campaign, celebrating immigrant, queer, poor, and single mothers by the Strong Families initiative. Watch their great video here!

Thoughts on the So-Called Gay Cemetery

Social Commentary post by Deb Jannerson on April 7, 2011 - 1:46pm; tagged death, family, LGBTQ, QUILTBAG.

Crest Lawn Memorial Park, via crestlawnmemorialpark.comOn Monday, the GA Voice broke the news that Atlanta's Crest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery will soon have a section "for gay people—couples, their children, single people, people who want to be with their chosen families." The Advocate and Queerty quickly picked up on the story, and it's likely to get bigger as the days go by, especially with the catchy misnomer "gay cemetery." (The lightning-quick spread of the innacurate term "Ground-Zero Mosque" comes to mind.)

For a number of reasons, the idea of a specifically queer section in a cemetery is troubling to me.

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Deb Jannerson on April 1, 2011 - 10:54am; tagged Action films, authors, Blog Roundup, Catholicism, Chris Brown, death, female politicians, feminist blogosphere, homeless, On Our Radar, voting.

Hello, hello! Ready for some thought-provoking links? I knew you were!

  • Today, in bad taste... anti-abortion group Life Always is comparing aborted fetuses to people killed by the earthquake in Japan. The always-astute ColorLines reports on the wrongheadedness of this tactic.
  • TransGriot writes about the importance of having trans* people in US cinema, and not just as characters.
  • Did you see the New York Times' claim that all of Washington D.C.'s influential pundits are young men... and Ann Friedman's response? Feministe gives us a run-down.
  • Also at Feministe, Chally Kacelnik speaks of voting in Australia and the passing of fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones.
  • Alvin McEwan muses on the irony of bishops denying queer people housing, and Frances Kissling talks about the life of Geraldine Ferraro, an influential pro-choice Catholic politician, both on AlterNet.
  • Comic lovers, have you heard about the Black Panther's apparent change into the American Panther? Arturo at Racialicious has questions and words for Marvel.
  • Some of us at Bitch HQ were unhappy to see this announcement about Mad Men's hiatus. Meanwhile at Philly, Ellen Gray explores the curious decision to include a documentary about 1960s divorce on the Season 4 DVDs. What's your take?
  • The Crunk Feminist Collective ponders intimate partners' reactions to the media, asking "How can I get next to you if I can’t get next to your politics?"
  • At the Atlantic, Sady Doyle asks what many action-film-lovin' gals have been wondering: How did we get to Sucker Punch?
  • Nancy Goldstein at the American Prospect discusses the importance of "Preserving the Triangle Factory Fire's Lessons."
  • Annette Bourdeau at Moviefone shares her five favorite screen adaptations of literary heroines. It's a start but is too short and limited, methinks. What are yours?
  • Speaking of adaptations, AfterEllen interviews iconic lesbian author Sarah Waters about the experience of having one's novels made into TV programs.
  • Are you a student? Feministing shares ideas for Sexual Assault ACTIVISM Month on your campus.
  • At HuffPo, Linkins argues against the claim that political liberals are silent about invading Libya.
  • Recently at a safety seminar, a Toronto cop told students that "Women can avoid sexual assault by not dressing like 'sluts.'" In protest, awesome local women are marching past police headquarters on Sunday for the Slutwalk!

The Lady Is A Tramp: Aiyana Stanley-Jones at the Altar of the Media

Social Commentary post by Andrea Plaid on May 26, 2010 - 3:55pm; tagged Aiyana Jones, black girls, death, media, The Lady Is a Tramp.
Aiyana_Jones.jpg

I’m taking a moment from my usual sexing-it-up posts because of the little girl pictured above.

For those who don’t know, her name is Aiyana Stanley Jones. And she’s dead. Her family just buried her this week.

She didn’t die from leukemia or in a drunk-driving accident or at the hands of an abusive or negligent parent or guardian.

She died for the sake of entertainment.
