The Five Best Genderqueer Characters in Comics

Runaways character Xavin describes being transgender

Xavin explaining not fitting in to male-female gender roles in Runaways. via

Both print comics and webcomics seem to be paying more attention to being inclusive these days, especially when it comes to LGBT characters. I've long treasured the diversity that's out there in webcomics if you dig a little bit, but even the comics you don't have to dig for are starting to include characters of color and queer characters. Jeph Jacques, for example, upped the inclusion ante at Questionable Content last year when two women of color and a white transwoman appeared in a one-panel diversitysplosion. Other comics seem to be moving in the same direction. Maybe next Randall Munroe will strike a blow to androcentrism and retcon the xkcd stick figures into being female-to-intersex pansexuals of color.

To celebrate inclusion in comics and encourage more, I'd like to put forward my top five list of the best genderqueer characters in comics.

Mom & Pop Culture: Comics & Superheroes: Who Will Save Us?

Social Commentary post by Avital Norman N... on November 21, 2011 - 11:57am; tagged comic books, gender, kids.
Now, maybe there’s a bigger subtext that I’m missing. I’m coming at this as a mom and a feminist, not necessarily as a comic book reader, so perhaps I don’t understand all the nuances of this world—I’ll own up to that. But when my son is starting to find himself interested in all things "Super," then I feel my opinion counts for something. We’re barely scratching the surface of superheroes—there is a whole lot more out there that is even more sexist, and racist—but just what we've seen so far has left this feminist mom clutching at her non-existent pearls.

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Mac Pogue on September 23, 2011 - 2:33pm; tagged comic books, Detroit, First Nations, Native Americans, On Our Radar, Reel Grrls, Troy Davis.

My, what a week.

  • Still reeling from the murder of Troy Davis? Check out "10 things anyone can do to help exonerate innocent people and prevent wrongful convictions" from The Innocence Project, and continue the fight for justice.
  • The first post in a series on queer identity and gaming is up at Yin Soaked Boy.
  • Have you been reading BFP's excellent series on Detroit at Feministe? The latest is on Rick Snyder's welfare cuts and going beyond "Capitalism."
  • Attention non-Native rock bands, fashionistas, hipsters, or anyone that feels the need to wear "tribal" wear, Media Indigena has a letter for you. And at Native Appropriations, Adrienne takes a tour through Urban Outfitters' "Navajo" obsession (behold, the "Navajo hipster panty"), and includes a sample of the cease and desist letter the Navajo Nation Attorney General sent UO several months ago.
  • Laura Hudson at Comics Alliance shows how DC's "rebooted" Starfire and Cat Woman aren't sexually liberated superheroines, it's just more of the same old T&A.
  • Shadow and Act has some excerpts from reviews of forthcoming Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights, which racebends Brontë's novel to feature a black Heathcliff who deals with race as well as class struggle.
  • Hey, Seattle-area readers! Do you remember Reel Grrls, the nonprofit that Comcast almost defunded? Well they're having a screening showing student made films about—what else—media justice.

Let us know what you think in the comments, and tell us what's on YOUR radar!

Revenge of the Feminerd: In Praise of Batgirl

Social Commentary post by Jarrah Hodge on May 18, 2011 - 10:00am; tagged batgirl, cassandra cain, comic books, comics, oracle, revenge of the feminerd, superheroines.

Yvonne Craig as Batgirl: she sits on a motorcycle and wears a cape and mask

Since those early days of running around doing Batman-themed dressup, Batgirl has been my favorite superheroine.

She’s less cutesy than the Sailor Scouts, nerdier than Nightshade, wears more clothing than Wonder Woman, and has a greater variety of super abilities than my second-favorite superheroine, Storm (but it’s really close, so don’t hate on me, X-Men fans).

Transcontinental Disability Choir: Disability in Comics -- A Discussion

Social Commentary post by OuyangDan on December 30, 2009 - 1:45am; tagged comic books, disability, pop culture, Transcontinental Disability Choir.
Comics haven't always been a bastion of feminist values, but they have given readers some fairly positive examples of characters with disabilities over the years. I've pulled together a brief list of characters who are more than just tropes meant to teach a Very Special Lesson.

Frank Miller Recaptures the Glory of Manhood for Christmas

Movies post by Tammy Oler on December 24, 2008 - 9:27am; tagged comic books, Eva Mendes, Frank Miller, Sarah Paulson, Scarlett Johansson, The Spirit.

I would be remiss for not mentioning The Spirit, Frank Miller's PG-13 cleavagefest opening tomorrow.  The Spirit features the longest roster of female talent in a comic book adaptation this whole year, but it's sadly a bunch of overstylized nostalgia - and a desperate amount of pandering eye candy for fanboys.  And, according to Miller, this is all in the name of restoring manhood! More after the jump....

Superhero Diversity Gets the Axe

Movies post by Tammy Oler on December 3, 2008 - 9:06am; tagged amazing spider-girl, birds of prey, black panther, blue beetle, comic books, DC Comics, manhunter, Marvel, oracle, she-hulk, spider-man, storm.

She-HulkBad news in the superhero world over the past few months: the downturn in the economy is impacting comic book publishers, and both Marvel and DC Comics are canceling a whole of bunch of their midlist superheroes. Unfortunately, the midlist is where a lot of titles featuring women and superheroes of color live in the comic book world. As a result, comic book diversity seems to be the biggest casuality of all these cancellations.
