Open Thread: Feminism, Fey, and Funny Ladies

Comedy post by Kelsey Wallace on April 15, 2010 - 1:54pm; tagged comedy, feminist media, open thread, Tina Fey.
OK, so I guess I was sort of under a rock the past few days, because I kind of missed the Tina Fey mega-freakout that blew up all over the feminist blogosphere. I have only watched a few clips from the episode, and I think I've yammered on (in blog form as well) about Tina Fey enough already, so I won't say anything about SNL here. (Except that I thought the Brownie Husband skit was kinda funny. There. I said it.)

Anywho, getting to the point, all this Tina Fey jibber jabber has me thinking: What DO we want from a feminist comedic actor? What ARE our expectations for our fellow funny feminists? Because of course we don't want to see ladies bashing other ladies, and we don't want to see ladies objectifying themselves in order to get laughs, and we don't want offensive humor that caters to the lowest common denominator (hell, we don't want to see dudes do that either). But what is it that we do want? And is anyone currently giving it to us? Let's discuss.

Farewell, Sarah Haskins. We hardly knew ye.

Comedy post by Kelsey Wallace on January 26, 2010 - 1:09pm; tagged comedy, Sarah Haskins, Target Women.
We heard it through the internet vine yesterday that Sarah Haskins is leaving Target Women. Nooo! Though it's great that Haskins is on her way to what seem like equally green if not greener pastures (penning scripts for Amy Poehler and Natalie Portman) she will be sorely missed. Sure, Target Women may get a new host, but who else could make us laugh about number two the way Sarah did?

More videos and Haskins goodness after the jump!

S'Wanda-ful

TV post by Juliana Tringali on November 8, 2009 - 6:44pm; tagged comedy, Fox, late-night, lesbian, talk show, Wanda Sykes.

Nyce.

This weekend saw the long-anticipated premiere of The Wanda Sykes Show, which airs Saturday nights on Fox. (That's right, this is my second post in a row regarding an out [and outstanding] lesbian performer on the Fox network.) Wanda Sykes made a strong debut with her usual style of laid-back indignation and smart-assed digs. It's no surprise that she's great in a talk-show format. What is surprising is how much she gets away with. Sykes did a sketch about eco-friendly sex toys. She spoke up for gay marriage. She ripped on Fox News. Wait, what network are we watching again?
