Preacher's Daughter: Sexual Violence and Discourses of "Purity"

Music post by Kristin Rawls, Submitted by Kristin Rawls on October 27, 2011 - 11:25am; tagged abstinence, abuse, child abuse, Christian, Christianity, conservative women, covers, domestic violence, Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monáe, new pornographers, sexual abuse, shame, the raveonettes.

I have spent a lot of time thinking about the silliness of "True Love Waits"-style campaigns, but it never really occurred to me to think about how a child who has been raped might experience these shaming "abstinence-only" discourses. That is to say, this would be particularly cruel, painful, and potentially traumatic for such a child.

Potentially even worse than teen purity rallies, I think, are the "purity balls."

Consider the opening line of this local news video: "Would you pledge your virginity to your father?"

Bechdel Test Canon: Lady Vengeance

Movies post by Alyx Vesey, Submitted by Alyx Vesey on November 15, 2010 - 12:37pm; tagged child abuse, Lady Vengeance, Lee Geum-ja, Lee Young Ae, mother-daughter relationships, Oldboy, Park-Chan wook, Vengeance trilogy, women's prison.
Geum-ja and JennyToday's entry is one of two movies in the series that is part of a trilogy. It is particularly noteworthy for following an installment that gets more critical attention. Frankly, I think Park Chan-wook's Oldboy is massively overrated. It seems strange to me that Hollywood has attempted to remake it so many times since its 2003 release, though its densely choreographed action sequences and emotional bombast elucidate its stateside mainstream appeal. The feted second feature of the Korean filmmaker's vengeance trilogy is celebrated for its grim subject matter, varied cinematic style, composer Jo Yeong-wook's sophisticated score, and emotional nuance.

Lady Vengeance has all of these elements and far surpasses Oldboy in its ability to dazzle and unnerve.

Fighting Back

“I never intended this book to be published,” writes Phoebe Gloeckner in the introduction to her new collection, A Child’s Life and Other Stories. Perusing these finely drawn, mostly autobiographical comic works, which span twenty years, it’s not difficult to see why its creator might be wary of foisting her stories on a public whose idea of an enjoyable narrative is Titanic. Gloeckner’s unsparing memory and painstakingly detailed pen-and-ink drawings of family dysfunction, childhood cruelty, and queasy sex make for seriously disquieting reading. The book takes us through the years with Gloeckner’s alter ego Minnie, whose childhood is dominated by her overbearing, ogling stepfather and whose adolescence is spent on the streets of San Francisco in a morass of unsavory drugs and even less savory men.
