I ♥ Sarah Waters

Music post by Amy S. Williams on August 22, 2008 - 4:26pm; tagged books, celebrities, lesbian, movies, pop culture, queer.

I felt very much out of the lezzie-loop yesterday when I found out that Sarah Waters' second novel, Affinity, has been made into a movie and was the opening night film at Frameline this summer.

Podcast Debate Club: Can Britney do justice to Varla?

Love / Shove post by Andi Zeisler on August 12, 2008 - 1:19pm; tagged celebrities, movies, podcast.

Say what you will about the shock-schlock, soft-core oeuvre of filmmaker Russ Meyer, the man was definitely ahead of his time when it came to showcasing the hips-lips-tits-power! aesthetic that would eventually become inextricably linked to third-wave feminism. His best-known work, 1966's sinsister thrillride Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, has come to be regarded over the years as something of a prefeminist classic, but even those who cock a skeptical eyebrow at the equation of big-breasted go-go dancers + homicidal karate chops = empowerment can probably appreciate the film's gonzo exuberance, as well as its arresting black-and-white cinematography.

A moment of silence, please...

Love / Shove post by Andi Zeisler on July 22, 2008 - 2:53pm; tagged celebrities, nostalgia, tv.

...for Estelle Getty — also known as the Golden Girls' Sophia Petrillo — who died today at age 84. Though her shoes were undoubtedly tiny, has any sitcom actress really filled them since? That's a rhetorical question, by the way, since each and every one of those smartypantssuited retirees kicked ass, but today's about Sophia. So share your favorite "Picture It: Sicily, 1912..." moments in the comments section, why don'tcha?

Why the love for Oprah?

Music post by Amy S. Williams on July 11, 2008 - 5:10pm; tagged celebrities, magazines, Oprah.

Okay, so maybe it is the heat of the office making me unusually cranky on this Friday afternoon but I just have to write and ask, what is the deal with the Oprah phenomena, and particularly the magazine?

Now I know these may not be popluar thoughts to have these days, but I've got two questions (among many) that have been burning a hole on my mind that makes this whole love fest just not add up for me.

A little appreciation for Pamela, please

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen on April 15, 2008 - 11:38pm; tagged authors, celebrities, commercialism, corporations, read this, sexualizing.

Thanks to Jennifer Pozner for defending Pam's choice of reading material.  If we're lucky, Ms. Anderson will propel Unmarketable into the best-seller world the same way Posh Spice did for Skinny Bitch.

You can’t turn on the television or flip open a magazine these days without encountering an image of a star promoting his or her latest cause célèbre: Oprah handing out makeup kits at a women’s hospital in Ethiopia; Angelina Jolie visiting refugee camps (alone or with Brad Pitt); George Clooney zipping around in his tiny electric car and making speeches about Darfur; Jay-Z and Kofi Annan holding a press conference about global water issues; Madonna performing concerts against a backdrop image of aids orphans—and, more recently, bringing a motherless Malawian boy home with her after making a large donation to his orphanage.
