Is the Fashion Industry a Hot Mess?

Women's Work post by Grace Bello on January 16, 2013 - 3:42pm; tagged career, fashion, Gossip Girl, Project Runway, Woman's Work.
GOSSIP GIRL

It's no wonder that there's a spot for Gossip Girl's Blair in the competitive world of fashion: she's the daughter of the creator of Waldorf Designs, she attended an elite private school where she gained connections to high society, and her family has no shortage of money. But for less privileged, real-life aspirants who move to New York in search of fashion dream jobs, the workforce is not so glamorous.

You Be The Judge

Women's Work post by Grace Bello on January 15, 2013 - 10:48am; tagged career, government, law and order: SVU, lawyers, Woman's Work.
WomansWork_LawAndOrder

Women have comprised almost half of law school enrollments in the last three decades. But in terms of the federal judiciary, the numbers haven't risen a bit. Currently, fewer than one in three of the judges on the federal courts of appeal are female. But you wouldn't know that based on TV portrayals of judges.

When Women Run the Show

WomansWork_30Rock

Though there's been a lot of talk of girl power on TV, there's not nearly enough gender parity behind the scenes of the small screen.

If we, like Betty Suarez and Peggy Olson, possess talent and ambition but not fashion-model looks, is there hope for us in image-conscious workplaces?

Offscreen, service jobs are not just a trope. They are a fraught solution to economic problems that heavily impact young, college-educated, indebted women.

Ms. Opinionated: All the Advice You Asked For, and Some You Didn't

Welcome to the latest installment of Ms. Opinionated, in which readers have questions about the pesky day-to-day choices we all face, and I give advice about how to make ones that (hopefully) best reflect our shared commitment to feminist values—as well as advice on what to do when they don't. This week: To grad school or not to grad school, that is the question.

The Pew Research Center offers startling, groundbreaking numbers on "Today's Woman" who "often balances her career with her husband and children." (Yes, this is a study from 2012, not 1975.) It is called "A Gender Reversal on Career Aspirations: Young Women Now Top Young Men in Valuing A High Paying Career." Hide your kids, people.

In the Frame: Artemisia Gentileschi, the Artist Who Broke the Mold

Art and Design post by Polly Allen on November 7, 2011 - 12:50pm; tagged art history, Artemisia Gentileschi, career, female artists, Italy, painting, rape.
My ultimate empowered female art heroine is a woman who made a career for herself long before the word "feminist" was in use. Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652/3) is a force to be reckoned with, taught by her father Orazio and following in the footsteps of fellow Italian, Caravaggio. She stood out not only because of her incredible talent, but also the obstacles she overcame in her personal life to make a career out of painting.

The Young and The Feckless: Gen Y's Biological Clock Talk Taboo

Social Commentary post by J Maureen Henderson on May 10, 2010 - 9:56am; tagged career, children, feminism, generation y, Hugh Hefner, ladymags, Larry King, millennials, motherhood, Nancy Friday, Oprah, pregnancy, reproductive health, Sylivia Ann Hewlett, the Pill, The Young and The Feckless.
I've hesitated about tackling this particular topic, but with the recent proximity of Mother's Day and the 50th anniversary of The Pill, I figured there was never going to be a better time to address it. My hesitation stems from a reluctance to drag biology into the equation and to bring up some unpleasant home truths that can't be advocated or educated away.
