Amazon Bookstore in Minneapolis has announced that they'll be closing their doors at the end of June. Founded in 1970 on the front porch of a women's housing cooperative, Amazon is one of the oldest feminist bookstores in this country. It's a different verse of the same sad song of the difficulty in sustaining projects committed to independent/social justice work, thought,
and culture.

According to the announcement:

On the subway this morning, I sat next to a man reading, Why Men Marry Bitches. Somewhat comically, the woman sitting on the other side of me was reading Che Guevara's essays on How to Change the World.

Today is Day One of our first-ever fundraising trip. It's an incredibly exciting time for us—venturing outside our little bat cave to meet some of our supporters on the other side of the country, and do some fundraising and education to keep our nonprofit operation thriving.
