Iconography: WTF, Glamour?

DigiBitch post by Kelsey Wallace on March 11, 2009 - 3:12pm; tagged American Icons, appropriation, crankiness, feminist icons, Glamour, starlets.

While we have long been able to count on the folks at Glamour magazine to tell us things like, "What He's Thinking When You're Naked" or "How to Dress 10 Pounds Thinner" (two of today's most emailed articles), it appears that they would now like us to rely on them for feminist inspiration. However, I found the "American Icons" photo spread in the latest issue to be less inspiring than it was confusing and disappointing.

The spread consists of twelve up-and-coming young starlets dressed like feminist icons from the past seven decades (it is Glamour's 70th anniversary issue). You know, because it makes perfect sense for two out of four of the stars of "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" to portray some of the alleged most influential women in recent history, right? Weigh in with your thoughts on the photos themselves, the motivation behind them, and suggestions as to who you would have liked to see in the photo shoot, after the jump!

Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections and contemporary women’s fiction

As every tabloid reader knows, it’s a short step from a celebrity marriage to a publicity-filled divorce. When Jonathan Franzen’s new novel, The Corrections, was published this fall, critics waxed hyperbolic over its wedding of character-driven family drama and up-to-the-nanosecond cultural commentary. Then Oprah chose the novel for her book club, and The Corrections seemed poised to bring about what many considered an even more unlikely union—this time of the lit-crit, severe-glasses clique and the suburban Barnes & Noble crowd.

Mad As A Wet Hen #1

How about that new Taco Bell ad featuring 11-year-old boys on the beach ogling a shapely lifeguard... Guess what? According to Cosmopolitan you'll never get a date without duct tape and a "No Trespassing" sign... When Camille Paglia addresses the defunct pedophilic Calvin Klein ads in the October 31 issue of The Advocate, she implies that pedophilia is somehow an essential part of gay life... Sometimes we feel like we hallucinated this one, because we only saw it once-and because it was so horrifying... We're all for home exercise equipment, but why do the ads always have to be so fucking smug?... Now we have Nike telling us that the revolution will not be televised. On tele-vision...
