RetroPop: Criminal Intent with Sia and David Guetta's "Titanium" and Anne Sexton's Romantic Murder

Music post by Brianna Goldberg on September 20, 2012 - 10:40am; tagged Anne Sexton, David Guetta, Sia.

Sia and Anne Sexton

Today we’re going to perform a little compare/contrast action on David Guetta’s tune “Titanium,” featuring Sia, by jamming it with the poetry of a woman whose work can (and did today, again, several times) make me weep from its heartbreaking awesomeness. Anne Sexton was born in Newton, Masachusetts in 1928. Sexton was the youngest of three daughters and quickly earned the title of the wild child. At seventeen, her parents sent her to Rogers Hall Boarding School in Lowell, Massachusetts to try and cure the rebellious side in her. After graduating from school, Sexton attended what she would later call a "finishing school" before she met and eloped with Alfred Sexton II in 1948. For a short time after their marriage, she modeled for a small agency. But after her husband was sent to Korea for a time, Sexton gave up modeling to be like a typical '50s housewife—but she was anything but.

Fascinated by this fucked-up-ness, the women decided to retell the stories in order to explore and combat the ancient -isms that lay deep, deep (actually not so deep) inside. In honor of the Make-Believe issue of Bitch (available now!), here are a few of my favorites.
