The Biotic Woman: A Conversation About Carnism with Melanie Joy (Pt. 1)

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on February 8, 2010 - 1:15pm; tagged animal rights, carnism, food politics, meat, Melanie Joy, psychology, speciesism, veganism, vegetarianism.
People often think about vegetarianism or veganism as an ethical framework or intentional life choice, but in her new book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism, Dr. Melanie Joy posits that eating meat comes from the same type of belief system. Dr. Joy, a professor and psychologist who works to promote empowering relationships between humans, animals, and the earth, spoke with me at length last week, and our talk is split into two parts here this week.

The Biotic Woman: Is Temple Grandin an activist?

Social Commentary post by Brittany Shoot on February 6, 2010 - 2:15pm; tagged animal rights, animal welfare, Claire Danes, cows, farm animals, HBO, movie, Temple Grandin, The Biotic Woman.
Claire Danes is starring in a new HBO movie premiering tonight based on the life’s work of animal scientist, livestock consultant, inventor, and writer Dr. Temple Grandin. On the Map: Ella Es El Matador

Social Commentary post by Mandy Van Deven on September 2, 2009 - 3:04am; tagged animal rights, bullfighting, Latin America, machismo, matador, On the Map, sexism, Spain.
I’m vegan. I think cruelty to animals is unnecessary and unjust. I don’t eat animals. I don’t wear them. And I don’t kill them for sport. However, Ella Es el Matador isn’t a film about animal rights, and treating it as such does it an enormous injustice. I don’t believe in prioritizing a conversation about cruelty enacted on bulls over one about cruelty enacted on women while discussing a beautiful and melancholy film exploring the world of bullfighting through the eyes of female matadors—so I won't.

Feminists Protest PETA For a Change

Social Commentary post by Kelsey Wallace on August 20, 2009 - 11:35am; tagged animal rights, Blogtown PDX, Ingrid Newkirk, PETA, Powell's Books, protests, Sarah Mirk, video, wweek.media.
Friend of Bitch (and Beaker Bitch blogger) Sarah Mirk posted a great piece over at Blogtown PDX yesterday on the new (and oh-so-unfortunate) PETA billboard in Florida, and the subsequent protest of PETA President Ingrid Newkirk's book signing at Powell's Books here in Portland. The offending billboard:

Seriously, PETA? I think I've lost enough weight already barfing at your ad campaigns

On Tuesday evening, the Portland Feminist Action League stood inside (and then outside once they were kicked out) of Powell's and gave Ingrid Newkirk (and her fans) a piece of their minds.
