America's Next Top Model

For Realz?: Supermodel Self-Delusion

TV post by Rita Hao on April 30, 2009 - 11:37pm; tagged America's Next Top Model, double standards, Make Me A Supermodel, male models, reality TV, weight.

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I completely mindlessly accepted that, on Bravo's Make Me A Supermodel, the modeling industry would require size 2 female model Salome to lose some weight in the hips, but got all outraged when they told male model and former ballet dancer Sandhurst that his thighs were too big for him to model jeans. And that it seemed plausible to me that female model Fo on America's Next Top Model was probably too short at 5'8" to make it in the industry, but that it was completely ludicrous that Make Me A Supermodel's Colin is too tall at 6'3". I feel bad now about my double standards!

Click read for the rest of the post. Picture of Sandhurst struggling to get denim over his self-described "thunder thighs." I'm not seeing it.

For Realz?: Caucasian America's Next Top Model

TV post by Rita Hao on April 24, 2009 - 11:23am; tagged America's Next Top Model, race, reality TV.
natalieupsidedown.jpgWhy is it always a race war on America's Next Top Model?? Natalie, the contestant who got booted this week (upside down at right), has a spiteful interview up on the E! website, where she says she must have lost because Tyra is giving preferential treatment to the two remaining African-American contestants, Aminat and Teyona.
"Tyra definitely has a soft spot for Aminat and Teyona. I think she just loves [their] personalities. I feel like they're most relatable to Tyra, since Tyra was a black model struggling. I think she has a hidden emotional connection with the black girls, and I think that's where a lot of favoritism comes from. I'm not accusing her of it, but that's just my opinion.

For Realz?: This Week In Reality TV Catfights

TV post by Rita Hao on April 2, 2009 - 6:51pm; tagged America's Next Top Model, Pretty Wicked, Project Runway, Real Housewives, reality TV.
This week in reality TV girlfights... Hello! I'm the new reality TV blogger for Bitch! Please be warned in advance, these posts won't be terribly deep. Also, there are some spoilers.

Just me, or has this week on reality TV just basically been women arguing with each other? A terrible affront to feminists everywhere, or the very reason why reality TV was invented in the first place???? We're ranking 'em (on a scale of 1 to 5 doorslams), here!

Tool Spirit

TV post by Juliana Tringali on January 28, 2009 - 1:45am; tagged America's Next Top Model, Charm School, douchery, The Bad Girls Club, Tool Academy, VH1.

An Assortment of Tools

"Terrible boyfriend? We can fix him. Complete tools transformed into knights in shining armor." These are the promises of the opening credits of Tool Academy, VH1’s latest trash-tastic series in which women drag their truly terrible boyfriends through a relationship boot camp in hopes of turning them into nice guys. The tools agreed to come on the show thinking it was called Mr. Awesome, a competition to determine "the biggest Alpha male in America." After they learned the show’s real premise, they all stayed on in hopes of proving themselves to their girlfriends...and winning $100,000 for being the best boyfriend.

If you’re wondering what makes a tool a tool, it appears to be a combination of made-up names (Celebrity, M.E.G.A., Matsuflex, etc.), excessive hair gel, and behavior that’s just…well, look if you dare.

(Note: The videos in this post contain ads. Blame it on VH1.)
