Douchebag Decree: American Apparel and Target: Hypocrite Corporations Using LGBTQ Pride to Make Money

Douchebag Decree post by Morgan Hecht on June 14, 2012 - 1:22pm; tagged American Apparel, corporate takeover, lgbtq rights, queer pride, Target.

American Apparel and Target you have earned our Douchebag Decree for trying to coporatize LGBTQ Pride although you have been anti-inclusive and homophobic. While Pride might only happen every June, it takes more than a recognition one month out of the year to truly be a company that cares about queer issues.

American Apparel's Next XL Top Model

Social Commentary post by Kelsey Wallace on September 7, 2011 - 1:05pm; tagged American Apparel, fashion, fat acceptance, Nancy Upton.
Nancy's tumblr (called extra wiggle room in response to AA's message to women who "need a little extra wiggle room where it counts") is full of photos of her posing in various levels of dress with various levels of dressing (haha, but seriously she has a bunch of photos of her pouring salad dressing on herself). Behold:

Nancy, a white woman, wears fancy clothes and eats chicken in a pool

The Unbearable Presence of Hair: American Apparel's Bush Administration

Social Commentary post by Katie Presley on January 12, 2011 - 3:34pm; tagged advertising, American Apparel, nudity, sexuality in advertising.

I like the conversations American Apparel inevitably starts whenever it comes out with a new advertising campaign. I'm not being snarky—some of the most radical (meaning at the root of) discussions about feminism I enter into start because American Apparel can't seem to stop. Well (and here comes the snark), guess what? AA still can't let go of its naked-ladies-trying-to-sell-me-the-clothes-they-used-to-be-wearing style, and new campaigns (banned in the US so far) are adding pubic hair to the already fraught mix of issues involved in these ads. So let's get to talkin'. (Assume that pictures and some links in this post, including those after the jump, will be NSFW.)

Lookism: OK If It's at the Hands of a Multinational Corporation

Social Commentary post by Katie Waldeck on August 5, 2010 - 11:20am; tagged Abercrombie + Fitch, American Apparel, corporations, discrimination, employment, Lookism, workplace discrimination.

Abercrombie + Fitch models

Mary Elizabeth Williams doesn't want to be sold pants by an ugly person. In her recent article for Salon, Williams maintains that the appearance-centered hiring practices and employee regulations of retail giants American Apparel and Abercrombie & Fitch are just, you know, logical and unproblematic corporate tactics to uphold brands. They're not lookist, they're not racist, and they're not sexist. Based on the evidence, though, we can't give her analysis that much credit.

Douchebag Decree: Terry "Creepy Uncle" Richardson

Comedy post by Sara Kantner on June 3, 2010 - 4:53pm; tagged American Apparel, Douchebag Decree, Douchebag Decree, douchebags, douchebags, douches galore, fashion, fashion, Marc Jacobs, models, nude photos, nude photos, pervert, pervert, photography, photography, porn, sexual abuse, Tavi Gevinson, Tavi Gevinson, Terry Richardson, Terry Richardson.

Disclaimer: I'm about to shamefully make a Huey Lewis & the News reference: It's hip to be...a perv? Well, Terry Richardson seems to think so. Ever since sexual abuse allegations against the hipster icon surfaced, the blogosphere has been commenting on the subsequent shit storms that keep popping up around this perv. So, it's about time that we deem Richardson a douchebag.
