2 Broke Girls

If you want to know why we see so few fully realized female characters over 50 on TV, look no further than the shows about women under 35.

We don’t need characters over 50 to help us work out our aging anxieties! Our 20- and 30-somethings on Girls, 2 Broke Girls, New Girl, and The Mindy Project have it covered, thanks.

The CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls has earned a reputation for racist jokes (also for unfunny jokes). You'd like to think that showrunner Michael Patrick King was working on fixing these problems instead of sticking to—and defending—his racist joke guns. Think again.

In the past few years, being broke has become something of a communal experience in America, to the point that television can no longer just air constant streaming coverage of millionaires and their matchmakers, their real housewives, their stylists, their babies, and their real estate, without seeming completely out of touch.  Network television’s response to the financial crisis is CBS’s 2 Broke Girls.

I watched 2 Broke Girls last night with what I felt were managed expectations. The show was co-created by a woman, but that woman is Whitney Cummings (who, with the addition of her show Whitney, may be responsible for this season's network sitcoms being schlockier than ever). The show is about a female friendship, but the premise is really trite and predictable. The show stars Kat Dennings (whom I like), but it is also really bad.


I agree. These uniforms ARE a visual representation of the tired stereotypes that permeate our show!
