By day I run an academic support program for women majoring in science, engineering and math.
By night I write for blogs and volunteer with feminist organizations such as the Chicago Abortion Fund, Women In Media & News and Women Employed.
I'm also a mom of a school-aged grrl and a wife.
Lastly I'm a die-hard Cubs fan, which explains why I'm as optimistic as I am about each new day. Take that George Will!
What I'm reading:
Right now I'm reading "Fucking Daphne" for the Women & Children First feminist book group. I'm also on book two of "The Sisters Grimm," which tells the adventures of the Brothers Grimm great-granddaughters in modern day New York. You can keep up with what I'm reading at GoodReads. Be my friend there!
What I'm listening to:
I'm an old married mom, so I listen to mostly NPR. I also am currently in love with my Sarah Mclachlan Pandora station. This is one area of my life that I know I need help with. Send me artists to listen to!
What I'm watching:
Rachel Maddow, DVR'd episodes of Sarah Connor Chronicles, Cubs games and PBS Kids. Word Girl rocks!
Mommy blogs are big business these days. A recent Washington Post profile on ur-mommy blogger Heather Armstrong (a.k.a. Dooce) suggested that her site could be raking in up to 40 grand a month. While most mothers who blog are nowhere near as influential (and their sites nowhere near as lucrative), they take pride and satisfaction in the work they do, and the websites they maintain offer valuable community, a sense of connection to other parents, and occasionally a little pocket change.
