"The black dyke got it wrong"

...so says the ever...quotable Christopher Hitchens.

As if Wanda Sykes could give a two shits about the "rules" to which he refers--rules which presumably don't apply to people who look like Rush Limbaugh, but do apply to people who look like Wanda Sykes.  For more from the "We Can Dish It, But We Can't Take It" files, read on...

I won't even bother to add anything to Tami's always-astute commentary:

So, given the usual tenor of the annual correspondents dinner, why the controversy over Sykes' saucy routine?

First, I don't think there is a controversy, though even the liberal talk station I listen to every morning insists there is. A quick Google and review of the ABC piece reveals that the only folks het up about Wanda Sykes' act are some conservatives who can always be relied upon to 1) hate anything that goes on during Obama's tenure, and 2) be self-serious and humorless, and a handful of pundits who 1) are manufacturing and debating the supposed "controversy" in their own echo chamber, and 2) well, see point two about conservatives. (I mean Pat Buchanan...Pat Buchanan...is offended?)

Secondly, about my friends on the right...more disingenuous outrage I have never seen. (Well, I have, actually. The right does disingenuous outrage like no one else.) If conservatives are willing to let a person who routinely and without humor or irony, makes hateful, racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, ugly and hypocritical statements like the ones above be the de facto spokesperson and leader of their movement, surely nothing that Wanda Sykes says could truly offend them. Limbaugh himself is an offense--one that the right and the Republican Party abide and abet.

Wanda was great...

First, Deesha, thanks for sharing this. Wanda was funny as hell. Even when she told the controversial jokes, she handled herself so well ('You KNOW you'll be telling this one tomorrow!').

As for Hitchens—he should most definitely get the douchebag honor around this blog very soon. I tried searching for more info/context on what he said and couldn't find any. What was he talking about? It's essentially a roast, right? And frankly, this was tame compared to Colbert's appearance when Bush was in office. His jokes about the administration were so scathingly true (and funny)—it's hard to imagine who had the bright idea to invite him?

Take note: Opinions expressed are those of their respective authors, not necessarily those of Bitch. Dig?

I 2nd the nomination

I had much the same reaction. "Wanda Sykes was funny, but remember Stephen Colbert?" Thanks for posting the clip.

If you're looking for reading feedback, I second the Christopher Hitchens douchebag decree nomination. I'm also curious about what he thinks Sykes got wrong, or why he thought it would be cute to call her a black dyke. Then again, I don't care. I'm going to assume that it's because he wrote a very infamous piece about how women aren't funny and it is in his professional and economic best interest to knock funny women whenever he can. He's not that deep.

Ugh

Why does she have to be so hypocritical?
