The Big Feminist BUT: Barry Deutsch's "How to Make a Man Out of Tin Foil"
We posted last week about The Big Feminist BUT, a book that addresses the still-problematic nature of feminist thought and identification via compelling, personal, and witty comic stories. As coeditors Shannon O'Leary and Joan Reilly put it:
We asked some of the most talented ladies (and gentlemen) working in comics and animation today, along with some of the smartest writers we know to "but" into the heated conversation about the much more level but still contradictory playing field both sexes are struggling to find their footing on today. By using the unique storytelling power of comics to discuss hot-button issues in a fun, fresh and engaging way, our contributors’ very graphic tales will entertain, move and inform readers about everything from modern families and lifestyles to significant historical events and ideas alongside current social trends.
Sounds good, right? Well, we're running one comic per week from the anthology to coincide with the project's Kickstarter campaign—which, with 18 days left, is just about halfway to its goal. (Backers can get some very cool rewards, including signed prints, minicomics, and more.)
Today, the featured comic is "How to Make a Man Out of Tin Foil," by Barry Deutsch. Barry's the man behind both Amptoons and the progressive, feminist blog Alas, a Blog; he also authored the graphic novel Hereville—as far as we know, the world's first graphic novel about an 11-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl superhero.
So enjoy, and consider donating to make The Big Feminist BUT available and continue the project of feminist comic publishing!

This was fantastic! Funny,
This was fantastic! Funny, sad, and certainly thought provoking. Made me really think about gender roles and how they force all of us to conform, and how damaging at times that can be. Also, I wanna make tinfoil superheroes now. How cool is that??
