Portlanders: Support your local nonprofit feminist bookstore!

Here in Portland, just a couple miles away from the Bitch office, lies a fantastic nonprofit bookstore called In Other Words Women's Books and Resources. In my humble opinion, it's one of the greatest places in town. Not only do they have an incredible selection of books, magazines, and zines, they also open up their space to the community for group meetings and classes, book readings, and study and discussion groups. They also carry crafts and other handmade goods from Portland locals.

Significantly, In Other Words is also one of the last nonprofit feminist bookstores in the country – maybe the last?

If you're a regular Bitch reader, you probably already know what it's like for those of us working to keep independent publishing alive – it's an uphill battle, to put it mildly. As countless independent magazines have closed up shop in recent years, so, too, have independent bookshops. In fact when we were redesigning this very website and got to the Where To Buy Bitch section, we had to take down about 30% of the bookstores because they'd closed.

If you're lucky enough to have an independent bookstore in your community, please support them.  And if you live here in Portland (or will be visiting), please come out for In Other Words' annual fundraiser/auction. It's two weeks from today, Friday, August 1st

Must be narly the last

Nice to know about this resource. My favourite feminist book store in London clased about five years ago. It is probably now a coffee shop. I will make a point to visit when we are in Seattle for the summer.
