On Our Radar: Today's Feminist News Roundup

Good morning! Here's all the news on our radar this Friday!

• Three cheers to the U.S. Senate for passing the bipartisan immigration reform bill, which paves the way for millions of undocumented residents to become full citizens. Whether it will pass the Republican-heavy House is another matter. [Politico]

"It's amazing that [TX state senators] don't trust women with a choice, but they trust them with a child." If you haven't read Texas state senator Leticia Van de Putte's editorial from the Houston Chronicle, "Why I Stood with Wendy," get there now.

• Meanwhile, Ohio's state senators are filling their own budget with abortion restrictions that would shut down many of the state's abortion clinics, defund Planned Parenthood, and funnel state funding to crisis pregnancy centers. One budget amendment even seeks to redefine pregnancy, deeming that a fetus is a "human offspring" from the moment of fertilization. [ThinkProgress]

• As the last person to speak to Trayvon Martin before he was killed by George Zimmerman, Rachel Jeantel was called as a witness in Zimmerman's trial. Since she first took the stand Wednesday, the 19-year-old's looks, speech, and manner have been the subject of obnoxious, hateful comments in both traditional and social media. Why? Oh, right, because people are awful. [Colorlines]

• From the Department of Amazon Reviewers Are the Best, the sneakers Wendy Davis wore during her filibuster are being praised for their toughness and ability to carry you through when you "speak rationally for a rational cause." [The Mary Sue]

• Hopefully the many more pressing events of this week distracted you from Paula Deen's official apology tour, but this open letter to Deen from the founder of the Cooking Gene Project is worth a read. [Afroculinara]

• Who else can't wait to see the new documentary Commie Camp, which profiles the history of Massachutsetts Jewish summer institution Camp Kinderland and its precocious, politically savvy young bunkers? Just me? [Tablet]

Mad at Rick Perry for trying to force abortion restrictions through the Texas legislature? Send him a message here!
