On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Here's all the feminist news on our radar today.

• I love reading through the New York Times' annual collection of obituaries of interesting people who died each year. Today, take some time for subversive domestic artist Ruth Asawa, actress Bonnie Franklin, and Nobel Prize-winning writer Doris Lessing. [New York Times]

• President Obama signed a major bill to combat sexual assault in the military. The new law provides legal assistance to victims and says that anyone who engages in sexual assault will get a dishonorable discharge—but it disappointingly still grants victims' commanders the power to hear assault claims and decide punishment. [ThinkProgress]

• As jails and prisons are overcrowded, the needs of inmates go overlooked. This year we had an alarming number of deaths in American jails. [Guardian]

• Ta-Nehisi Coates has an interesting article about giving dads more credit than they deserve for doing basic parenting. [The Atlantic]

• A group of adorable Boy Scouts delivered pizza to Utah court clerks who were skipping lunch breaks to marry gay and lesbian couples this week. Meanwhile, the state government is still planning to fight the decision to allow same-sex marriage. [The Daily Grind, Salt Lake Tribune]

• Speaking of which, since 2011, a majority of Americans have been in favor of same-sex marriage. Some interesting research digs into why so many people changed their minds on the issue. [Sociological Images]

Mary Richards? Methinks you mean....

I believe your writer put the wrong name in your Feminine News Round-up link.

Mary Richards (the name on the link) was the character that Mary Tyler-Moore played on the Mary Tyler-Moore Show. The person mentioned at the link was Bonnie Franklin, who played Ann Romano on One Day at a Time.

right!

That's a mental slip. I fixed this. Thanks!
