On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Here's some of the feminist news we're reading about right now:

• The world is collectively mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, who died yesterday at the age of 95. [New York Times, NPR]

• Conversations by people of color on Twitter and other social media platforms are holding the American media accountable for their lack of skill and sensitivity in discussing race in pop culture. [Salon]

• If you were disappinted when Rashida Jones told women to "stop acting like whores," you're probably still going to be disappointed by her explanation of it, even though it's always nice to hear celebrities engaging critically with feminism. [Clutch]

• In the latest installment of comedic reactions to Cosmo's sex tips, someone actually tests out some of the awful advice they give, like eating a doughnut off of a penis, or poking your partner with a fork while you have sex. Hilarity ensues. [AlterNet]

• Wearing clothes you don't usually wear can bring you out of your comfort zone and raise a lot of questions about identity, community, and presentation. One person reflects on their own experience with this in "Fat-Booty Butch Wears Leggings—Confuses World, Confronts Self." [Autostraddle]

Ecole Polytechnique

Today is the 24th anniversary of the massacre at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal http://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/dec/03/montreal-massacre-canadas-f....

if you're in Seattle, you may wanna check out

the premiere of "Unified Struggle," a documentary about the anti-deportation victory of Dede Adnahom.

For those who don't know about Dede, she's a community organizer and mother of three who was subject to deportation hearings for the past few years. I mentioned her briefly in an earlier post:

Earlier this year, she and organizers with Who You Callin' Illegal successfully STOPPED her deportation!

If you're in Seattle tonight, check out the film premiere:
