On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Here's all the news on our radar today:

• Hobby Lobby's CEO continues to be horrible. The company's lawsuit arguing that health insurance shouldn't have to cover birth control heads to the Supreme Court. [Autostraddle]

• The Hobby Lobby lawsuit puts Justice Antonin Scalia in a strange place: he rejected employee's claims to religious liberty in an older case, but seems ready to side with the bosses in this one. [Salon]

• Sometimes public radio show The Takeaway is intolerable, but today they had a solid segement about women studying computer science—including a shout-out to Ada Lovelace.  [The Takeaway]

• In this interview, doula Annie Robinson talks about the important role doulas play in all aspects of pregnancy, including helping women through abortion. [The Atlantic]

• Just because it's interesting, here's a quick timeline of Bjork's history of becoming an environmental activist. [Guardian]

• Alright, now for two great pieces about Hollywood not casting people of color in complex roles. NPR Code Switch looks at several cases where actors were cast as characters who have traditionally been different race—like the recent decision to cast Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in a Warner Bros. Peter Pan reboot. [NPR Codeswitch]

• Follow that up with this hilarious video from actress Tess Paras that turns Lorde's hit "Royals" into a song about typecasting. [via Colorlines]

MA House unanimously passed anti-shackling legislation

`TODAY, the MA House of Reps unanimously passed legislation that ends the shackling of incarcerated women during labor, delivery & postpartum recovery. (The legislation also ensures minimum standards of pregnancy-related care for people behind bars.)

The vote was 146-0. Now the bill goes to the governor's office. Governor Deval Patrick has already announced that he will sign anti-shackling legislation once it reaches his desk.

This will make Massachusetts the 19th state to legally protect incarcerated women from being chained during childbirth. (If you're curious, the other states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.)
