On Our Radar

tagged Blog Roundup, feminist blogosphere.
It's Friday, which means our radar is beeping! Here's what we've been reading in our post-Thanksgiving-feast torpor.
- We're pretty excited that someone noticed how tired Sex and the City comparisons are when writing about "the modern woman." We're not so excited that the New York Times has missed that memo.
- World AIDS Day was December 1st, and we're pretty sure these celebrities have their hearts in the right place with the "Buy Life' campaign, but really? "Sacrificed her/his digital life?" Huh.
- Forbes (I know, right?!) has a blog post up contributing to the never-ending discussion over successful, educated women and their childbearing habits. And guess what? There's even a Sex and the City reference in there.
- Remember how John McCain really, really doesn't want any gay Americans in the military? Well...he still doesn't.
- Courtney at Feministing wrote about the "sister school" experience, and how stereotypes of women's colleges can turn deadly.
- Taking a turn for the very weird, glam-metal-punk-glitter-rock band GWAR disemboweled a visage of Sarah Palin at a recent concert, and it even made Gawker uncomfortable.
- Slate applies "stereotype threat" theory to girls in science, with interesting (if a little generalizing) results.
- The Daily Beast wrote about parental involvement in bullying, and Slate was underwhelmed.

GWAR/Palin
I feel half obligated to defend GWAR.
They have been "killing" people since the 80's. If people are just now getting mad about them slaughtering political figures or headline makers, they haven't been paying attention.
I've been a GWAR fan for many, many years. I highly doubt the Sarah Palin slaying was gender prompted but more politically prompted.
They "kill" everyone. I watched a video of the Palin mock-death and it was not out of context of any of the others.
Last I saw them in concert (2008, just before the Election) there was a duke out between Obama and McCain. McCain punched off Obama's head and squirted "blood" all over the crowd then McCain, I believe was disemboweled.
The band cannot be taken seriously, by anyone. It's impossible to take this band seriously. They are supposed to be Aliens or something, from outterspace.
You wear a white shirt to the show to see how much blood and goo you can get on yourself. They squirt the crowd with just about anything they can think of.
They have a whole "show" with a story line and it's always absolutely absurd. For instance, the "Reganator". During the Bush administration they had a running story about how Bush and Cheney had brought Regan back from the dead as a machine of some sort. The band was forced to kill the Reagnator then kill Bush and Cheney.
I guess my point is, if you're going to be mad about GWAR, be mad about everything GWAR, not the Palin "death".
To really get a sense of how "wtf" they are here they are on Joan:
Also, Gwar on Palin's own network, multiple times.

Gwar/Gawker
Hi Anon,
I'm glad you defended GWAR. This performance certainly was not without huge precedent. The specific link I chose to share was chosen because it was on Gawker, a site that is usually fairly shameless about its content. I was intrigued that feminist-sounding reasoning affected the Gawker author's sense of queasiness about the Palin-doll-murder, when so much content on that site is un-feminist leaning to anti-feminist.
Getting covered by goo is not my ideal concert experience, but GWAR deserves defense, I agree. Viva Slymenstra!
