Keep Bitch in Print: A Message from the Stacks

A photo of the Bitch Community Lending Library's sandwich board. It's teal with black print that reads Community Lending Library above an image of an open book with glasses on top. Below the image, the sign reads OPEN Come on in! with an arrow pointing to the leftWorking in the lending library at Bitch Media, I meet dozens of people each week who care deeply about print. From the out-of-towners who stop by the library cause they heard about our collection of out-of-print Sassy and ROCKRGRL magazines, to the house of ladies down the street who take turns coming in to check out feminist books for their coffee table, our library is frequently abuzz with people who love the printed feminist word.

Lots of people who come into our library ask to see the very first issue of Bitch magazine. For those who have had committed fifteen-year relationships with our print magazine, paging through that very first black and white zine is a walk through memory lane. Others, who have become quick friends with the magazine in recent years, are excited to hold that premier issue in their hands and consider how far the magazine has come. Some library visitors tell me about their first time picking up the magazine, others share stories about how the magazine held them over during difficult times spent in sexist environments. Dozens of people come into our library each week excited to talk about the magazine.

The blog, podcasts, and lending library aren't going anywhere, but if we're going to continue to print the magazine that the people who come into our library each week know and love, we need your support now.

I'm a fan in the UK and I

I'm a fan in the UK and I have everything crossed for you that you get all the money you need to keep going. I love the magazine and buy it whenever I can from my local shop that stocks it. However, I know subscriptions are better for you so -for quite a while now- it has been my intention to get one once I can afford it. Seeing your latest alert for subscribers gave me the extra push I needed to revisit the subscription page with the view to finally signing up properly. The trouble is that I only have an average of £52 per week coming in after paying my rent so I really can't justify paying $12.48 (£7.66) per magazine (even a brilliant one like Bitch). Joining the B-Hive at the minimum price for an international supporter is also out of the question for me right now.

Sorry to moan when you really need people to step up to the mark with the cash. I suppose what I'm trying to suggest is that there must be plenty of other readers like myself out there who would love to help out but would need to be able to pay an amount more proportional to their incomes. Of course, I don't know if the amount lost from people like us would be a mere drop in the ocean compared to getting a larger amount of money per go from readers with more disposable income. I also appreciate there's an argument that people with money they *could* spend will generally choose to be frugal if the option is available, so allowing them to pay less would mean not reaching your target. But surely it also stands that even small amounts help?

...Obviously it goes without

...Obviously it goes without saying that loads of small payments could, in theory, end up being more lucrative than just a few bigger ones. However I admittedly have no idea whether those potential small payers are outnumbered by the potential bigger payers so... I'm not sure what to say here except I appreciate the position you're in. It's just that the situation is frustrating for me and I wanted to express that in the name of reader opinion.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Anonymous, for sharing your experience. We understand that international subscriptions are pricier, and that not everyone can afford them. Of course we appreciate smaller donations (many of our supporters give us one-time donations of $5 or even $1)—every little bit helps!

As far as your situation goes, did you know that we have digital editions available through our website? It's not the same as getting a magazine in print, I know, but it's a more affordable option for non-US-based readers.

Hope that helps!
