I just wanted to share that one of our super talented contributors, Jennifer Cruté (who appeared in the Dark Confession comics feature of the Noir Issue), features heavily in this lovely short documentary, KAPOW! It's great to see Friends of Lulu getting some exposure, and the video is a nice introduction to the rich history of women in comics, both as creators and as characters.

For those interested in learning more, I recommend the works of Trina Robbins, comic-creator and historian. Particularly her books "The Great Women Cartoonists", "From Girls to Grrrlz: A History of Women's Comics from Teens to Zines", and "The Great Women Superheroes".

I also direct interested readers to check out Sequential Tart, a weekly online journal focusing on the comics scene from a female perspective.

I do have to shudder a little though at the use of the "Kapow!" header. I know for years this has been kind of an instant shorthand to indicate comic-related material, but its roots in the campy 1960's perpetuates a view of comic books and the comic medium as juvenile, faintly ridiculous and unworthy of serious consideration and scholarship (I know-I know, everybody's got a touchy-point).

I used it because it's the title of the film. But if you see Cruté's work, it's not about superheroes at all...and frankly, my favorite comics rarely are. Thanks for weighing in!
