Happy Love Your Body Day!

poster for the campaign featuring a woman holding a frame over her torso. the text reads you are a masterpieceIt's Love Your Body Day! From the NOW website:

Today, the National Organization for Women Foundation celebrates its 14th annual Love Your Body Day—a day when women of all sizes, colors, ages and abilities come together to celebrate self-acceptance and to promote positive body image. Since the launch of Love Your Body Day in 1998, NOW Foundation has used the campaign to challenge the unrealistic beauty standards and gender stereotypes promoted by the media, Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries.

Our bodies do a lot for us (thanks, internal organs!), so let's return the favor. If you're looking for a way to spread the body love, consider participating in the NOW Blog Carnival or following along with the #lybd hashtag on Twitter.

Are you doing anything to celebrate your body today?

Body Lovin'

I wish I could remember whether this was from, a tv show, a movie, a magazine article, I forget. But the message was this and I've purposely remembered it to guide my body loving. It went something like this, and though it seems only relevant for able-bodied gals, it can be adapted to anyone's body and anyone's capabilities:

From a very young age, we are taught to focus on what our bodies look like. But what about focusing on what our bodies can do? Our arms can hug and comfort someone. Our legs can run and jump and dance and kick. Our eyes can see and cry and sparkle.

So when you look in the mirror, don't just think about what your body looks like. Think about all the amazing wonderful things your body can do.
