File Under Spokespeople from Beyond the Grave: Bea Arthur Supports PETA

First it was Tiger Woods' deceased father chastising in the name of Nike, and now we have the late, great Bea Arthur reminding us to... not buy McDonald's? What to make of this?

I recall something about her

I recall something about her being a PETA spokesperson when she was alive. Perhaps she left posthumous permissions? Or it's an old PETA stock photo from her spokesperson days? Who knows?

Don't forget about Yul

Don't forget about Yul Brynner, who made this anti-smoking PSA from beyond the grave:

I don't think its creepy

I don't think its creepy because she left money in her will for that purpose. She was also a spokesperson for PETA in her life, so she just cared passionately about this cause and they are respecting her wishes which she outlined in her will.

Tasteful, even for PETA

Compared to their normal objectifying-women -for- the -sake -of- animals PSAs this is pretty tasteful. Why can't they run this kind of ad more often?

Something about the idea of

Something about the idea of Bea Arthur rolling over in her grave struck me as crass. When I'm deciding who to leave money to in my will, I'm not sure I want the public to think of me as animal rights activist zombie stalking Mickey D's from beyond the grave. These also aren't really her words in a very literal way. If Bea Arthur were alive would she choose to be the spokesperson for this particular issue? We can't know.
The rest of the ad, the small print, has a completely different tone. It lauds Bea Arthur's support of PETA when she was alive and shares a really concrete way PETA is utilizing her money now that she's dead. Unlike the bold font, it drops the pretense that the contemporary "McCruelty" campaign is something she could know about or have an opinion about from beyond the grave. It's more clear that they are using Bea Arthur's ideals and support to pursue their campaign. That's less creepy.

Once again....

.....PETA is showing themselves to be an attention seeking yet ineffectual vehicle. This organization is focused on stunts and theater instead of affecting REAL change in the fight against animal abuse. Bea's donation could have been spent more wisely. She could have consulted with her animal loving co-star Betty White! Corporate animal charity--where does all this money REALLY go?

My other main BITCH with PETA is their abusive approach to using women's sexualized bodies (as meat?!) to promote messages.

An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto
a friend who had been conducting a little homework on this.
And he in fact bought me lunch simply because I found
it for him... lol. So let me reword this.... Thank YOU for the meal!

on your site.
