The Feminist Porn Awards is staging its seventh annual awards ceremony tomorrow night, and for the first time ever, folks at home can watch the awards ceremony live-streaming at Girlzporn.com, so you can cheer for your favorite fisters, dirty-talkers, and filmmakers to take home the butt plug-shaped statuette. Girlzporn's editor-in-chief Alison Lee, a former organizer of the Feminist Porn Awards, says, "The FPAs are always a great means of bringing together members of the local and international sex communities," and she believes that live-streaming the awards will "open up the event to a wider audience, increasing the exposure of feminist porn directors, performers, and their work."

We've covered Good For Her's Feminist Porn Awards before, online ("Beyond the Money Shot") and in the mag ("Adult Education," no.39). Seven years ago, the awards began as a response to racism in mainstream pornography. Toronto feminist sex shop Good For Her had to keep sending offensive videos back to their producers, thinking "It's really too bad nobody recognizes the filmmakers who are making an effort to do something better." Thus the awards were born, and the ceremony recognizes films that meet three criteria: A woman had a hand in the production, writing, direction, etc. of the work; it depicts genuine female pleasure; and it expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenges stereotypes that are often found in mainstream porn.

Porn has always been (and may always be) a lightening rod for controversy when it comes to feminism, but as long as there have been degrading vids with questionable labor practice (and camera angles), there have been porn actors with agency working for a better and more equitable industry. Feminist porn ("Wait, isn't that a contradiction?" - Almost Everybody) has also been around for some time, with folks like Abiola Abrams, Tristan Taormino, and of course Good For Her making, promoting, and discussing porn in a way that's feminist, inclusive, and hot. Plus, discussions around women enjoying porn have been popping up on The Hairpin, Clutch magazine, and GOOD, showing that conversations about mindfully consuming porn is making its way out of feminist spheres and into more mainstream arenas.
