BitchTapes: This Too Shall Pass
It's one of those weeks—the kind where you wake up hating everything, and it's hard to decipher exactly why. Maybe it's a combination of things—perhaps it's the weird teen angst hangover of your early 20's, or you're missing somebody, or maybe you took the comments section of a blog post too personally, or maybe it's none of that and you're just sad because people have feelings, and that's okay. Tears build up like a raging river, held back by the dam that is your eyelids. You continue your day by wallowing, writing a sad letter, sitting amongst unfolded laundry and unfinished crafts. Then, as soon as you think it's all starting to feel better, something else happens and your face becomes Niagara Falls. And it's nothing that hugs and nice words can mend because your feelings are serious business. But maybe next week will be better. You can only hope.
Here are some songs to accompany a sad day/mad day/bad day, which will probably only make you more upset but sometimes it's what we need, right?
1. "Redford (For Yia Yia & Pappou)" - Sufjan Stevens
We don't always quite have the words to describe what's bummin' you out. Sufjan Stevens knows how you feel.
2. "Wake" - The Antlers
"It was easier to lock the doors and kill the phones than to show my skin, because the hardest thing is never to repent for someone else, it's letting people in"–this song seriously hits home for me right now.
3. "Sad Eyes" - Bat For Lashes
It's hard to hold it together, and that's okay. Let your eyes be sad.
4. "Don't Ask" - Grizzly Bear
We don't always have an answer when someone asks, "What's wrong?"
5. My Tears Are Becoming a Sea" - M83
Let 'em flow, because bottling them up will only make it worse.
6. "Nothing and Nowhere" - Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton
Nothing and nowhere feels right. Nothing and nowhere is golden. Maybe something about where you are gives you a bad taste in your mouth, and you despise everyone, and everything is just unbearable. Well, Emily Haines doesn't have a better perspective than we do, but she feels ya, right?
7. "Gravity" - Lemuria
Gravity, it keeps us grounded, but it also can really hurt when everything bad seems to have built up like a heavy backpack.
8. "Breathe In" - RVIVR
Sometimes when you cry, you forget to breathe. Take a few deep breaths. It helps, I swear.
9. My Bad Days" - Okkervil River
Yup, we all have 'em.
10. "None Shall Sleep" - Pepper Rabbit
I know when I'm sad, I have trouble sleeping, because I know I'll have to deal with all of the same bullshit again tomorrow, but tomorrow might be a brighter day, who knows?
11. "Gone Away" - My Brightest Diamond
Shara Worden is just going to pull at your heart strings for a few minutes. When you're missing someone or something, she gets it.
12. "Black Rainbow" - St. Vincent
It's hovering over us, and we can't escape it, but I think Annie Clark's angsty guitar riffs might inspire us to run from that black rainbow and find a the sun and a clear sky.
All I can say is have a self-care day, and take some time to process, because you deserve to feel better.
