BitchTapes: Colored Girls Hustle Hard

Yesterday was Juneteenth, the anniversary of the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and a commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. In the spirit of freedom and liberation, Colored Girls Hustle Hard made a mixtape that aims to amplify the voices of women of color through music.

"The Colored Girls Hustle Hard Mixtape is a musical salad: a little crunchy, mad juicy, lots of special sauce, and it will nourish your body, mind, and spirit. It is a beautiful practice of sisterhood, courage, creativity and self-expression and I am blessed to be a part of this movement!" said Jessica Valoris, co-creator of the tape.

About the songs:

With nine songs and nine interludes, the Mixtape features the voices of Colored Girls Hustle LLC’s Taja Lindley and Jessica Valoris as well as the following guest artists: Chaunda "Dezi" Brown, Jasmine Eileen Coles, Audrey Elaine Hailes, Ema Lou, Kelly Thomas. The Mixtape also includes the voices of over twenty guest contributors who submitted audio files about their passions, their purpose, and their various hustles.

In alignment with hip-hop tradition, this Mixtape features instrumentals from other hip-hop artists as well as two original beats. Listeners can anticipate hearing instrumentals from Bone Crusher’s “Neva Scared,” Jay Z’s “Jigga What Jigga Who,” Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap,” Future’s “Sh!t,” Drake’s “Started From the Bottom,” Rick Ross’ “Everyday I’m Hustlin” and Method Man’s “You’re All I Need.” Original beats have been created by Ron Roosevelt (for the track “Ooo Oh #PirateBooty”) and Ralleyrahrah (for the track “Do It Again #GiveThanks”).  “AfroAliens” was engineered by Sincere King and the remainder of the songs on the Mixtape were engineered by Elus. Hustle interludes were curated and composed by Taja Lindley.

Needs more Sammus

Ummmm come on ya'll, no Sammus? Self-produced PhD student and rapper chick? She has multiple songs about working hard and being smart: BYP, Success, Mayhem...big fan of hers and of Bitch.

Glad you're a fan!

This mix tape doesn't have any tracks by Sammus on it, but we published a great article of hers about women and hip hop last year. Check it out: "Beat Makers With Boobs — Hip Hop, Race, Feminism."
