B-Sides: A Wild Flag "Romance"
The debut album from WILD FLAG (say it with me in a Bill and Ted "Wyld Stallyns!" shout-y voice) drops this month! Finally! Until we get Wild Flag in our hot little hands on September 13, let's stream it at NPR First Listen and take a look at the oh-so-fun video for the first track, "Romance."
("Romance" lyrics here)
In the video, band members Mary Timony, Janet Weiss, Carrie Brownstein, and Rebecca Cole play secret friends who work in the same office but at different posts (janitor, executive, security guard, and receptionist, judging by their clothes). They meet in the parking lot in the middle of a work day to joyride around town, and the "rebellious" activities they choose for their clandestine hangout are heartwarming and hilarious. (I don't know about you, but I love the concept of badass women skipping work to hang out at the dog park, mow a geriatric neighbor's lawn, and drink coffee out of a bucket.)
The song itself is about loving music and loving the friends that music brings together. The chorus is a rowdy singalong, declaring, We love the sound/ The sound is what found us/ The sound is the blood between me and you. When paired with such a freewheeling and joyful video, it seems clear that Wild Flag wrote the lyrics about and for each other. (Could this be the psyched fangirl in me projecting my friendship fantasies onto the band? Maybe.)
Whatever inspired it, watching the "Romance" video on repeat is a great way to tide ourselves over until Wild Flag drops (next week!) on September 13.
