Long live the Queen: Rest in peace, Bea Arthur

DigiBitch post by Ashley Brittner on April 26, 2009 - 1:43am; tagged Bea Arthur, Golden Girls, Maude.

Bea

It is a sad day for fans of the incomparable Bea Arthur, who died of cancer Saturday. Arthur was revolutionary on so many fronts, on both stage and screen, bringing feminist issues like abortion and ageism to light while crushing gender stereotypes. She proved the snake eye, a commanding voice and a confident swagger were just as fit for the ladies as they were for the fellas. She played funny, smart and unrelenting sarcasm to a tee. She was one of a kind. She will be missed.

Cleats or Ballet Shoes?

Sports post by Jonanna Widner on April 24, 2009 - 1:22pm; tagged dance, football, gender roles.

Most people, regardless of gender, are born with 206 bones. Experts say human beings have between 640 and 850 muscles (they’re so difficult to count, a precise tally is impossible). Boy, girl, and in-between, we all share the same number of eyes, appendages, nerve endings. We have the same instincts—if we touch a hot stove, we pull away; if something is thrown unexpectedly at us, we duck.

For Realz?: Caucasian America's Next Top Model

TV post by Rita Hao on April 24, 2009 - 11:23am; tagged America's Next Top Model, race, reality TV.
natalieupsidedown.jpgWhy is it always a race war on America's Next Top Model?? Natalie, the contestant who got booted this week (upside down at right), has a spiteful interview up on the E! website, where she says she must have lost because Tyra is giving preferential treatment to the two remaining African-American contestants, Aminat and Teyona.
"Tyra definitely has a soft spot for Aminat and Teyona. I think she just loves [their] personalities. I feel like they're most relatable to Tyra, since Tyra was a black model struggling. I think she has a hidden emotional connection with the black girls, and I think that's where a lot of favoritism comes from. I'm not accusing her of it, but that's just my opinion.

BitchTapes: Gender-Bendy Covers Edition

Music post by Kelsey Wallace on April 24, 2009 - 8:25am; tagged Antony & The Johnsons, BitchTapes, Cat Power, covers, gender bending, Jeff Mangum, Nancy Sit, Roberta Wolfson, The Fiery Furnaces, The White Stripes, The Zombies.

It's Friday, and that means BitchTapes! (Located on the sidebar to your right as well as after the jump, for you newcomers out there.) Today I thought it would be nice to visit the fabulous land of cover songs. Because this is BitchTapes, I thought it would be even nicer to hear some covers that incorporate a healthy dose of gender bending (they're good songs, too).

I have always enjoyed a good cover song, and to me that means that the artist doing the covering interprets the song in her/his own way, keeping the lyrics the same but altering the song's meaning through the performance. This happens especially when the coverer and the coveree are of different genders, and it can make for some pretty interesting listening.

Read on for the track list, and a little bit of background info as well. Enjoy!

Bill O'Reilly's Fair-weathered 'Concern' For Women

DigiBitch post by Malori Maloney on April 23, 2009 - 10:54pm; tagged Douchebag Decree, Eminem, Fox, Sarah Palin, We Made You.

Almost invariably, Bill O'Reilly yells from the confines of the television in my Nana's living room. Nana likes to keep the TV on for background noise and she loves Fox News. I typically do my best to ignore Bill's rants, but once in a while, I just can't look away...

Ladies ARE funny, says Portland's Bridgetown Comedy Festival

DigiBitch post by Ashley Brittner on April 23, 2009 - 6:15pm; tagged Andy Wood, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, funny, Janeane Garofalo, Portland, Rylee Newton, stand-up comedy.

Bridgetown

As of late, I have had a lot of exposure to stand-up comedy. I have always been intrigued by this art, since I appreciate a good healthy dose of wit and I grew up watching Paula Poundstone, Lisa Lampenelli and Margaret Cho. I even toyed with the idea of trying to perform at one of these events, since I feel like I am funnier than I actually am. Since moving to Portland, I have attended countless open mics and performances and guess what: a lot of male comics still use "bitchy" women, double standards about beauty and the like and menstruation when it comes to their material ("Periods...I mean right?"). A friend of mine is also one of the only female comics I have seen on a regular basis at these open mics, which is why when I heard that the second annual Bridgetown ComedyFestival was starting today, and was being headlined by the iconic and sharp-as-a-tack Janeane Garofalo, I swooned hard. Read more after the jump!
