Homogeneity in Seoul Made Me Appreciate the Diversity We Do Have Here

Model Media post by Yoonj Kim on May 9, 2013 - 10:09am; tagged body image, plastic surgery, South Korea.

I spent last week in Seoul, the modern cultural hub of South Korea, where international sensation Psy first made his mark.  It's a crowded city plastered with images of celebrities on buses, billboards, storefronts, giant windows, and any other usable space.  As I traversed the city, one thing that struck me was how uniform all their faces were: big eyes, white skin, raised nose bridges.

As the modeling industry here is accused of conforming to a white, northern European look as the standard of beauty, South Korea seems to be chasing a different ideal: a generic Caucasian look.

Can a Society Run by Women Still Be a Dystopia?

Girls of Color in Dystopia post by Victoria Law on May 9, 2013 - 9:36am; tagged Brazil, dystopian, girls of color, matriarchy, Summer Prince, women of color, YA fiction.

The summer prince cover: a girl of color has a computer arm

Continuing along this guest blog series' theme of class, caste and slavery, let's look at a city run by women of color in Alaya Dawn Johnson's The Summer Prince.

The book's society, seen through the eyes of young main character June Canto, is a clear critique of class and race dynamics that exist today. As in our real world culture today, the people at the top of The Summer Prince's society refuse to recognize the oppression that exists their literally pyramid-shaped city.

On Our Radar: Today's Feminist News Roundup

News post by Emilly Prado on May 9, 2013 - 8:33am;

Good morning!  Here's what we're reading for the day:

  • When Seema Jilani attended the cocktail hour of the White House Correspondents' Dinner with her husband and forgot her keys upon exiting, she was greeted with horrifying, blatant racism by the security as she tried to reenter. [Huffington Post]
  • Ladies are all too familiar with catcalls and unwarranted "compliments" from dudes.  Here's why men should think twice before telling a woman he doesn't know that she looks hot. [Freethought Blogs]
  • Although Francisco Martinez was awarded the honor to meet President Obama after winning an academic competition, that privilege was denied after he was deemed a "security threat" for being an undocumented student. [Jose Luis DREAMS]
  • Being a member of marginalized group in the age of Internet memes and GIFs creates fear whenever a "ridiculous" or scary news story breaks. Renee of Womanist Musings feared for how she and other marginalized groups would be percieved if the man who dialed 911 for weed and burgers was Black and if the Boston bombers were of color and/or Muslim. [TransGriot]
  • A film about young girls from different countries throughout the world seeking access to a better education called Girl Rising is urging viewers to donate to their cause.  While it's inspiring and whatnot, there are two major flaws with the film. [Bitch Flicks]
  • With the race to succeed and urge to help your kids get ahead, schools are trying more than ever to cater to these desires.  One New York private school is giving it a go at $43,000 per year, and even claims to teach "humility." [Slate]
  • Below is the trailer for a new Lifetime series produced by Eva Longoria called "Devious Maids."  The show features five Latin American women, working as maids.  Tanisha Ramirez of the Huffington Post wrote a piece about "Devious Maid's" problematic portrayl of Latin American women and how it perpetuates stereotypes.  A few days later, Eva Longoria posted a rebuttal in defense of the show. [Lifetime, Huffington Post]

Why Didn't Police Listen to Amanda Berry's Mother?

News post by Sarah-Jane Stratford on May 8, 2013 - 3:39pm; tagged abuse, violence against women.

Missing poster for amanda berry

There are far more questions than answers surrounding the case of the three kidnapped women in Cleveland who finally escaped their captors this week after up to a decade of imprisonment. Many details about their ordeal will certainly come to light in the coming weeks. But one question that should be at the forefront is why police didn’t find the missing women years ago.

Part of the answer is that Cleveland police held a dangerous assumption: that two of the victims, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight, were missing because they had each run away. Tragically, this assumption led law enforcement to take their cases less seriously.

Douchebag Decree: Disney's Grab for Dia de Los Muertos and Half-Assed Apology

Douchebag Decree post by Emilly Prado on May 8, 2013 - 2:24pm; tagged cultural appropriation, Disney.

DOUCHEBAG DECREE logo

Oh, Disney.  We don’t always want to hate on you. Sometimes we even debate whether your princesses have gotten better over the years. But now you want to trademark the phrase “Dia de los Muertos”?!

I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: An Interview with Child-Free Comedian Jen Kirkman

Women Aren't Funny post by Gabrielle Moss on May 8, 2013 - 2:12pm; tagged books, Comedy.

Comedian Jen Kirkman promoting her new book

Traditional family life has long been fodder for stand-up comedy—but jokes about life as a child-free woman are a less-charted terrain.

Luckily, we have comedian Jen Kirkman to lead the way. Kirkman, a writer and regular performer on E!’s “Chelsea Lately” and “After Lately,” recently released a New York Times best-selling memoir, I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales from a Happy Life Without Kids.

Though I Can Barely Take Care of Myself covers Kirkman’s entire life—including her Boston childhood and long comedy career—and zeroes in with especially sharp wit on the experience of being an adult without children.

Kirkman took a moment out of her current tour in support of the book to discuss what inspired her book, why some people think child-free women will change their minds, and what happens when an elementary schooler attends a sleepover party while dressed like Groucho Marx.
