Welcome to the latest installment of Ms. Opinionated, in which readers have questions about the pesky day-to-day choices we all face, and I give advice about how to make ones that (hopefully) best reflect our shared commitment to feminist values—as well as advice on what to do when they don't.

Dear Ms. Opinionated,

I am recently divorced, though I have been on my own (with my children) for three very long difficult years.

On Our Radar: Today's Feminist News Roundup

Bitch HQ post by Andi Zeisler on June 7, 2013 - 7:53am;

Good morning! Here's all the feminist news on our radar today...

• In life-imitates-Grand-Theft-Auto news, a Texas judge has acquitted a man who shot and killed a Craigslist escort who refused to have sex with him. [Gawker]

• A website dedicated to exploring the "black hair experience" is hosting an art exhibit in New York City where people can touch different textures of black hair. You know, like a petting zoo. With black people. This is really problematic, right? [Clutch]

• The Heckle Heard 'Round the World is yielding plenty of thoughts on race, manners, and the appropriate place for protest. At Time, Anna Holmes considers how racial stereotypes allowed the heckler to be viewed, in some corners, as a victim; at Feministing, Zerlina Maxwell uses gifs to commend FLOTUS for her grace under pressure. [Time, Feministing]

• If we've learned anything this week, it's that nothing is more sacred to male comedy fans than their inalienable right to make rape jokes. Here's why one female comedian has nothing but yawns for them. [Tess Rafferty]

• A female cosplayer on sexist micoragressions, short-skirt policing, and the default assumption that geek-minded conventions are male spaces. [This View of Life]

• Don't feel too bad about slighting that Salvation Army bell-ringer next time Christmas rolls around: In a recent radio interview, SA's media relations director affirmed that part of the organizations "belief system" is the belief that gay parents deserve to die. Excellent media realtions, guy! [TGV News]

• If you ever doubted that Silicon Valley has a pronounced diversity problem, these three simple charts will prove it beyond a doubt. [Mother Jones]

Women Aren't Funny post by Gabrielle Moss on June 6, 2013 - 5:10pm; tagged Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, women in comedy.

Bridesmaids poster: All the cast leaning against a wall in pink dresses

In this mad, mad world of ours, there are only a few things that we can all agree upon—the sky is blue, the internet cat video pheonomena is an excellent waste of time, and the film Bridesmaids was one of the biggest hits of 2011. It earned a total domestic gross of $169,106,725, was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay, and made stars out of actors Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Rebel Wilson.

But it was more than just another surprise summer blockbuster.

Academia's Anti-Fat Problem.

Social Commentary post by Amy Erdman Farrell on June 6, 2013 - 1:45pm; tagged academia, fat acceptance, fat phobia.

The offensive tweet

“Dear obese PhD applicants: if you don’t have the willpower to stop eating carbs, you won’t have the willpower to do a dissertation #truth”

That tweet from University of New Mexico evolutionary psychology professor Geoffrey Miller ignited uproar last week.

New Book "Sexy Feminism" Aims to Make Feminism Accessible—But is a Bit of a Mess

Books post by Melissa Arjona on June 6, 2013 - 12:18pm; tagged feminist theory.

sexy feminism book cover, which has the title over juicy red lips

Feminism doesn’t need to be scary.

Instead, says Sexy Feminism: A Girl’s Guide to Love, Success, and Style by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and Heather Wood Rudúlph, feminism is relevant, sexy, and fun to boot. The new book aims to make feminism approachable to people who might otherwise shy away from it.
