Drinking Like Mad Women

Video post by Kelsey Wallace, September 29, 2009 - 8:36pm; tagged alcohol, Double X, Mad Men, video.
In a world where feminism means a zillion different things to a zillion different people, there is really only one thing that it seems we feminists can agree on these days. That thing? That Mad Men is f#@$ing awesome. We love it. Feminist blogs that typically have nothing to do with television are falling all over themselves to review each episode, and this feminist right here sets aside each Sunday night for a little quality time with Sterling & Cooper. (You do too, right?)

That being said, in the midst of all that Mad Men love, there is a burning question that remains: How on earth do the employees at Sterling Cooper drink so much during the workday? Did people really used to do that? Well, the staff at Slate's Double X decided to find out what happens when completely sane and sober women drink like Mad Men. Check out the video results:

Douchebag Decree: Marketing Tucker Max

Social Commentary post by Kjerstin Johnson, September 11, 2009 - 3:17am; tagged alcohol, Douchebag Decree, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, misogyny, rape, Tucker Max.

Whether it's his offhand-way of dropping misogyny, his female-rating system that puts how-many-beers-til-she's-hot-Yalies to shame, or his website that requires only the most minimal of minimal perusals to incite any feminist, it's not difficult to dislike Tucker Max. He's been utterly dissed by the Hater, called a "gender traitor" by Glamour's Ryan Dodge, and this is most definitely not the first time he's been called douchebag. But as a self-professed asshole, Tucker Max would no doubt affectionately embrace this week's Douchebag Decree title. Therein lies the problem: a compelte willingness to embody--and market--being a D-bag.

And with a movie based on his best-selling (yep!) book I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell coming out Sept. 25 and a second book Assholes Finish First coming down the pipeline (customers who bought this item also bought The Complete A**hole's Guide to Handling Chicks!), Tucker Max isn't going off the radar any time soon. But why care?

When Mothers Hit the Bottle: reaching a gendered approach to alcoholism

DigiBitch post by Kjerstin Johnson, August 11, 2009 - 7:06am; tagged alcohol, alcoholism, Diane Schuler, double standards, drunk-driving, FAS, MADD, motherhood.
A highly circulating AP article on the increasing number of women with DUI charges sends mixed messages about women who mix drinking and driving. In the wake of a tragic car accident that killed eight people, four of which were children, media attention has focused on women who drink and drive--especially if they're mothers. Diane Schuler was found to have consumed alcohol and marijuana before driving onto the the wrong lane of traffic. According to some studies, in recent years women have been drinking more and have been arrested more for DUIs. But troublesome quotes seem to direct attention off the problem at hand and more to why it's all of a sudden women are getting caught drinking.
"Younger women feel more empowered, more equal to men, and have been beginning to exhibit the same uninhibited behaviors as men," said Chris Cochran of the California Office of Traffic Safety.
It does seem to be coded language for “Feminism drove Diane Schuler to drink and then to drive,” an anti-feminist myth with dangerous repercussions. I fully support an end to drunk driving and alcoholism, and my heart goes out to everyone who has ever lost someone to drunk driving. My beef is with the way the media is approaching the issue of women (and mothers) who drink. It's as if it takes the unthinkable for attention to turn on how to address women and alcoholism (this is in addition to the fact that the statistics don’t quite tell the same story). Barbara Ehrenreich got it right when she said "Gender equality wouldn't be worth fighting for if all it meant was the opportunity to be as stupid and self-destructive as men can be."

Shot through the vagina, and Rock of Love Bus is to blame.

Love / Shove post by Kelsey Wallace, January 21, 2009 - 6:36am; tagged alcohol, Bret Michaels, reality tv, Rock of Love, vagina shots, VH1, WTF?.
Just in case you are tired out from celebrating Obama's inauguration today (although if you aren't tired of celebrating you should totally watch this video) we thought we would bring you a little diversion. So let's take a minute and think not about this historic day and how happy we are to have a president who is not an international embarrassment, but instead about Rock of Love Bus. More specifically about the scene from the first episode where Nikki takes a shot from Gia's vagina. (Hey, we said we were going to give you a diversion, right?)

Drinking

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen, July 14, 2008 - 5:23am; tagged activism, alcohol, alcoholism, bar culture, community organizing, discuss!, drinking culture, inclusive spaces, obstacles to activism.

Alcohol is a depressant, right? And alcohol use and aggression/violence are related? But isn't it possible to use alcohol as a force of good, as a relaxant, as medicine? Don't we all deserve coping mechanisms?... And who are we to judge?

Warning: Downer alert
