Open Thread: Thanksgiving

Social Commentary post by Kelsey Wallace, November 25, 2009 - 6:55pm; tagged Food, gender norms, open thread, PETA, Thanksgiving, tradition.
Way back when I was but a young feminist in a WGS 101 class, my professor asked the class to describe our Thanksgiving traditions as a way of further explaining the notion of gender norms. As more and more students told tales of men sitting on the couch watching television while women basted turkeys and mashed potatoes, light bulbs turned on around the room. Aha! Gender norms! Men and women are both expected to play certain roles, even during such great American holidays as Thanksgiving!

Holidays can bring out the best and worst in all of us (especially when you've got an uncle that likes to play "bartender" by pouring shots for everyone the way I do). So what are your Thanksgiving traditions? How do you negotiate gender norms when you get together with your friends and families in the kitchen? What about the racism inherent in Thanksgiving? What are you going to cook/eat this year? Oh, and do you remember THIS?

Read on for more Thanksgiving!

Adventures in Feministory: Marthe Distel, the First Top Chef

History post by Kelsey Wallace, November 23, 2009 - 8:00pm; tagged Adventures In Feministory, Food, La Cuisinière Cordon-bleu, Marthe Distel, Top Chef.

With Top Chef boiling down to its final two episodes (go Jennifer, go!) now seems as good a time as any to delve into the history of the fancy world of professional chefs. From Top Chef (yes, a television series, but fancy nonetheless) to the James Beard Award, there are tons of impressive accolades out there for ambitious chefs to get their knives on, and we love to watch it happen. So how did this culinary world come about? And is it true that a woman is behind it all? (Spoiler alert! Yes, a woman is behind it all!)

Douchebag Decree: Mike Isabella

TV post by Kelsey Wallace, October 29, 2009 - 5:47pm; tagged Bravo, Douchebag Decree, Food, Mike Isabella, sexism, Top Chef.

Fans of Bravo's Top Chef this season know there's been one "cheftestant" that everyone with a remote control and an appetite for snarkiness loooves to hate: Douche de la Semaine Mike Isabella. And what's not to hate? Mike I. (not to be confused with Mike V., who is slightly less hate-able) is arrogant, sexist, annoying, loud-mouthed, and just not that funny. So, not to be left off of the "Mike Isabella is a Giant Ass" train, I am awarding him this week's Douchebag Decree.

Congratulations! You're a winner!

Read on for more, but beware: Spoiler (and Douche) Alert!

Women, Film, and Food

Grrrl on Film post by Ink-Stained Amazon, September 7, 2009 - 8:17pm; tagged Babette's Feast, Cooking, Farmer's Markets, Food, Gurinder Chadha, Julia Child, Like Water for Chocolate, Lisa Jervis, Pieces of April, Soul Food, Women in film.

Having spent the weekend filling my freezer with late summer goodness from my local farmer's market and finding out about Lisa Jervis’s new book Cook Food: A Manualfesto for Easy, Healthy, Local Eating, the Grrrl on Film has nourishment on her mind.

And I’m not the only one, the recent release of Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia has placed Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking back on best seller lists. And last weekend marked the kickoff of Canning Across America – an event organized by a nationwide ad hoc collective of cooks, gardeners and food lovers committed to promoting safe food preservation and the joys of community building through food with how-to classes, demos and home canning parties in cities around the country.

As a result, I’ve been thinking about women and food in film and have come up with a short list of women preparing and/or enjoying food on screen. Some of these I’ve seen, and some I haven’t, but here’s a delicious sampling to whet your appetites!
