Know Your Hipster Gendered Band Names!

Music post by Kjerstin Johnson, July 17, 2009 - 5:02pm; tagged All Girl Summer Fun Band, girls, independent music, JD Samson, Kid Sister, Le Tigre, live music, MEN, music, Parenthetical Girls, pop music, rock music, Sons and Daughters, women.

Whether I'm checking out music blogs, browsing upcoming concerts in my local alt weekly, or trying to download songs illegally, I can't help but notice some of the names that indie rock acts (read: hipster bands) are coming up with these days, bands named Women, or Girls, which turn out to be more like dudes and bros. It's like having a lady-indicative word in your band name is the new having an animal-indicative word in your band name! Well, almost. I've compiled a short list of current, contemporary bands that err on the side of both misleading and not-so-misleading gendered band names to help you navigate the tides of new and upcoming music. (FYI, Queen = all dudes too)

Peregrine Honig's Purdy Birds

Art and Design post by Kjerstin Johnson, April 1, 2009 - 8:53pm; tagged art, girls, objectification, painting, sexuality.

Peregrine Honig’s work, like her name, strikes you immediately and is hard to forget. My friend Pia would take me gallery hopping in our hometown of Kansas City, which is where I first discovered her work...

Girls make media

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen, August 18, 2008 - 6:34pm; tagged girl media, girls, Girls Make Media, media creation, zines.

Passing on the news of a recently-launched website dedicated to honoring and mobilizing girls' media production called Girls Make Media. Creator Mary Celeste Kearney is hoping the site will become a resource for girls, as well as media educators, researchers, and others dedicated to amplifying the voices of girls.

Looks like it's off to a good start -- please check it out, spread the word, contribute...

Know about New Moon for girls?

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen, July 14, 2008 - 11:34pm; tagged friends of Bitch, girls, magazines, media, new media.

Several months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Gruver, founder of New Moon, a magazine aimed at girls ages 8 to 12. New Moon is great – they're ad free, have girl editors and writers. They have a girl blog. Oh, and they're also based in Minnesota.

Today in my inbox was a message from Nancy sharing the news that on September 1, they'll be launching New Moon Girls web community – like the magazine, it'll be ad free, girl-driven content. In the meantime, they're trying to raise money.

Help them out, won't you?  It's a rare thing to find media aimed at building up girls' self-esteem rather than tearing it down.

"Are you ready to rock 'n' roll?"

Love / Shove post by Debbie Rasmussen, March 8, 2008 - 4:56pm; tagged documentary, events, girls, movies, Portland, rock, women in rock.

If there's anything more awesome than seeing an eight-year old girl scream that into a microphone, it's being in a theater full of girls like this celebrating the opening of Girls Rock! The Movie.

Girls Rock! The movie

Girls Rock!

Bitch on Wheels post by Debbie Rasmussen, March 7, 2008 - 9:38pm; tagged girls, movies, music, rock, women in rock.

Tonight Girl's Rock! The Movie premieres in selected cities across the country. I'm going! You should, too, if it's playing where you live (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, Seattle, Portland, New York, Chicago). If you're not familiar, Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls is a nonprofit that teaches girls ages 8-18 to learn how to rock DIY style and in the process, build their self-esteem and self-confidence. If you're someone who wishes the rock camp would've been around when you were a girl, check out Ladies Rock Camp, their annual fundraiser.
